Absolem (sometimes Absalom) Scholes was born 15 May, and baptized 20 July 1825 in the Wesleyan chapel in the parish of Batley, Yorkshire, England[1]. He was the son of David Scholes a mason, and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of John and Judith Dickenson, living in Morley, a township and ecclesiastical district, in the parish of Batley, Yorkshire.
Absalom, aged 32 years, his wife Mary (24) and children (Albert 10, Edwin 8 and Ellen <1) emigrated to the Colony of Victoria in 1857. They travelled on the Shakespeare a ship of 1820 tons licensed to carry 470 adults passengers (exclusive of cabin passenger). The ship departed Liverpool on 21 Sep and arrived Melbourne on 20 Dec 1857. A total of 514 steerage passengers (430 adults, 60 children and 24 infants) were carried onboard. Of the adults, 323 were English emigrants, 18 Scots and 88 Irish. There were 9 deaths on the voyage (2 adults and 7 children). One infant was born three weeks before the ship arrived in Port Melbourne[2].
Mary's brother, Addison Lumb had emigrated to Victoria probably some time in 1854-55. He was a stonemason who had settled in Ceres, in the Barrabool Hills, west of Geelong where a flourishing quarry industry was established by Nicholas McCann and his sons. The McCanns and the Lumbs extensively intermarried, Absalom and Mary possibly emigrated in response to the experiences of Addison. They were extensively involved in the Methodist community in Highton and Ceres.
