Biography

William, the son of Robert and Sarah, was born the 8th month (October), 2nd day, 1689, as recorded in the Chesterfield Meeting of Friends Minutes.[1] They noted he was born in America.[2]

The elders of the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting of Friends were appointed "to Talk with William son of Robert" Scholey, about some of his habits (date not recorded in the Minutes but likely early 1700s. It is believed William left the fellowship of the Friends. There is an entry in St. Marys Episcopal Church of Burlington New Jersey that reveals, "William Seoholey, the son of Robert Seoholey baptised february 28, 1702". Thomas, Andrew, Elizabeth, Mary and Hannah, the children of Andrew Smith were baptized at the same time. But, if he did abandon the Quaker faith it doesn't appear his offspring did. William, born about 1704, believed to be his son, is mentioned in the Woodbridge Minutes in the 3rd month of 1740. It was agreed that they would hold a "Meeting once in three Months at the house of William Schooly... S'd Meeting Shall be held on the Second first Dayes of the fourth Seventh Tenth and first Months". This is a good example of the way the avoided using the names of days and months. The Friends of Hanover Township were granted liberty to hold meetings at his home in 1746 on the "first dayes of the weak".

It is believed William and Mary's children were William (b. 1704), Robert (b. about 1710), and Joseph (d. before April 9, 1761 when his estate was mentioned in his brother, William's will).
