Biography

A Family group sheet sent by John Getz from Lula Launius gives his birth date as 1 Feb. 1785, Stokes County.

He married at least four times:

Barbara Berrier (1774-1810) was the daughter of Rudolph Berrier and Anna Catharina Helmstetler. Friedrich Jacob and Barbara were parents of a daughter Elisabeth Schott, who married Joseph Nading in 1836.

His next marriage was to Elizabeth Rothrock (1788-1826). This marriage produced at least three children: Andrew (1813-1823), Delila (b. 1817), and Christian (1819).

His third wife was Maria Salome Lanius (1783-1849), widow of John Holder. The marriage bond is recorded as Federick Shut and Sarah Holder, 27 Feb 1830, Stokes Co. NC. No children were born to this marriage.

In June 1849 he married Zevely (Sively or other spellings in some records) Crotts (b. 1805), widow of Walter Northern. Friedrich died less than a month later, and in January 1850 she married Christian Essic or Essex.

There is also a Stokes Co. marriage bond for Frederick Shuts and Sally Hess, 4 Dec 1804. Was that also Friedrich Jacob Schott, or was it someone different, possibly named Shultz or Schultz rather than Schott?

Records of the Moravians in North Carolina[1] 10:5430. July 18, 1849. Today the funeral was held in Hopewell of Friedrich Schott, a married man, who died suddenly yesterday. He was a Lutheran. His home going was unusually sudden. For he had gone with his wagon to a part of his plantation to fetch something and since he was absent longer than had been expected, a search was made for him. It came as a great shock to his family that he was found lying on his back, dead. I preached on I Peter V: 8:9. I endeavored to speak most earnestly, especially since this was the 4th case of sudden death in this area within a few weeks.
