Johann Schott von Schottenborn fought with Lord Lazaro von Schwendi-chief in Hungary under the Emperor Maximilian II in 1564, and served as Schwendi's squire in about 1567. In 1570, he entered the service of Duke Charles of Lorraine as an Archer of the Guard, who knighted him. Johann Schott von Schottenborn married and through his wife, owned a chateau (Castle of Hattonchatel) in France, which came into the possession of the House of Lorraine in 1540) at Hattville on a lake (La Chaussée) in Lorraine near Nancy and Metz In 1587 Johann Schott von Schottenborn compiled the foregoing history in Braunfels at the castle of Count Eberhard of Solms (image 103)—(In 1994, Joseph Schott and his sons, Jim and Robert, toured and had dinner in this castle). Johann Schott von Schottenborn in 1587 followed Count Eberhard to join Henry of Navarre and the French Huguenots in the war against the Holy League. Johann Schott died without heirs at his chateau shortly after his return, from an illness contracted in the campaign.
28.9 The family genealogy was continued in 1598 by Hans Georg Schott, cousin of Johann Schott von Schottenborn, and in 1652 by Johann Schott (d. 1661) of Büdingen, nephew of Hans Georg, who lived through the terrors of the Thirty Years War. He left two sons, Philip, Captain-lieutenant of Dragoons in the army of Gustavus Adolphus, and afterwards burgomeister of Hanau; and Hans George, ensign of foot and horse in the same service.
