Biography

Franz "Frank" Schott was born and baptized on 28 September 1862 in Renchen, Baden, Germany. His parents were Heribert Schott and Friederike Huschle.[1][2]

He immigrated to the United States sometime between 1878 and 1880, as a young man, and became a naturalized citizen.[3]

He married Pauline Rieger, daughter of Adam Reiger and Rose (last name unknown), on 3 September 1891 at Houston, Harris County, Texas, USA.[4] Together they had 4 children:

  1. Franz Ludwig Friedrich (Frank Lewis) Schott, b. 30 Mar 1893
  2. Herbert Joseph Schott, b. 16 Jun 1895
  3. Bernard Thomas Schott, b. 25 Oct 1898
  4. Catherine Schott, b. about 1901

In 1893, Frank opened Schott's Bakery, at 3014 Washington Avenue in the Houston Heights neighborhood, with "no capital except the knowledge of making bread."[5] According to census records, the family lived at the bakery, and they all worked there in various capacities.[6][7][8] Frank retired from the business by the 1920s, and turned over its operation to his son, Herbert. It eventually became a wholesale business only, with the expansion of the plant in 1924.[5]

By 1930, their children were no longer living with them.[9] Frank and Pauline moved to Galveston County before 1935.[10]

Frank died of cancer on 20 January 1944 in Houston,[11] and was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery.[12] His wife died just a few months later, and was buried beside him.[13]
