Biography

Volga German
August Schott was a Volga German.
August Schott has German Roots.

Family #171 in the 1897 Grimm census.

He is one of two children named August Schott born to Alexander Schott and Elisabeth Margaretha Fritzler Schott. Their older son named August, born in 1896, passed away as a young child. They named their child born in 1904 August, as was frequently done in Volga German communities, probably to honor another relative named August. Show below is the family's listing in the 1897 Grimm census.

1897 Grimm Census [1]

Family # 171
Head of the Household Schott, Alexander, head of household, age 33
Wife Elisabetha Margaretha [Fritzler] Schott, age 35
Child #1 Alexander Schott, age 6
Child #2 Karl Schott, age 3
Child #3 August Schott, age 1

The 1897 Grimm census is the last census available or the Colony of Grimm. Therefore, any information about descendants comes from descendant records. Surviving villagers were forced to move east in 1940, with little time to pack things like family records. Any belongings left behind were most likely destroyed. This means that the likelihood of finding paper records for anyone born between 1898 and 1960 is low.

Fritzler and Brester family records show that August Schott married three times:

  1. Maria Fritzler, 1907-1931, married in 1928
  2. Amalia Fritzler,1911-1946, married in 1932
  3. Natalia Müller, 1910-2007, married August Schott in 1947 as her second husband, first was Mr. Lefler

August Schott had seven children, of which only three children survived into adulthood. Those three surviving children are in bold in the list below.

  1. Katharina Schott, born 1928, died 1928, daughter of Maria
  2. August Schott, born 1929, died 2018, son of Maria
  3. Unnamed Schott, born 1931, died 1931, child of Maria
  4. Friedrich Schott, born 1933, died 1936, son of Amalia
  5. Albert Schott, born 1941, died 1942, son of Amalia
  6. Irma Schott Groh, born 1949, died 2004, daughter of Natalia
  7. Private Child, born after 1949, still living, child of Natalia

August Schott was one of the Volga Germans displaced from his family home in Grimm and sent to live in the eastern part of Russia, probably either Siberia or Kazakhstan. Although he survived through the end of World War II, he died five years later on 16 April 1950. I have sent an email to a descendant to see if she can confirm where he died.

August Schott's son August was one of the Germans who moved back to Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall. He died in Hamburg in 2018.
