Gerhard Schröder is Notable.

Gerhard Fritz Kurt Schröder was the 7th chancellor of the Bundesrepublik Germany and prime minister of Lower Saxony.

Family and work

He is the son of Erika Vosseler and Fritz Schröder, who was killed in action in World War II in Romania on 4 October 1944, about six months after Gerhard's birth.

In 1976 he was admitted to the Hanover Regional Court as a lawyer. He initially worked as a salaried lawyer and from 1978 as a partner in a law firm.

Schröder was married to Eva Schubach from 1968 to 1972, to Anne Taschenmacher from 1972 to 1983, to Hiltrud Hensen from 1984 to 1997 and to Doris Köpf from 1997 to 2018. In 2018 he married Kim So-yeon.

Schröder has no biological children; he is the stepfather of a daughter of his fourth wife Doris. Together with her, he adopted two Russian orphans.

Political career

  • 1963 member of the SPD
  • 1980-1986 member of the Bundestag
  • 1986-1998 member of the Lower Saxony state parliament
  • 1990-1998 Prime Minister of Lower Saxony
  • 1998-2005 Federal Chancellor
  • 1999-2004 chairman of the SPD

Already during his active political time he was often accused of being too close to business leaders, he was dubbed a "comrade of the bosses" and "car chancellor".

After retiring as Chancellor, he worked for Russian energy companies. He was therefore accused of pursuing one-sided business interests for his own benefit, which relativize his political principles and damage trust in democracy.
