Biography

OBITUARY: Marjorie Schubert Head, "Nicki": Born in Lincoln, Texas June 1, 1918. Youngest of 8 children of William Ernest Schubert and Edna Mathis. Nicki had twin sisters, Bertha and Ida, who were 6 when she was born. She always loved and was close to all the siblings. Her father died when she was 12 and she lived with her Mom and brother Sonny, on a small farm with a garden, a pony. and a dog named Jack. She and Sonny attended a one room school house in Lincoln for 8 grades. She always said she learned everything very well because she heard all the lessons repeated. All the other siblings had left home to work. Three sisters became nurses. Edna worked as the postmistress of Lincoln. Nicki graduated from Giddings High School in 1935, Salutatorian. She went on to the University of Texas for one year.

After that year in Austin, she moved to Baytown, because Bertha was living there working for Exxon Refinery as a nurse. Nicki worked for the doctor in the refinery as a secretary and met Ross Head, the love of her life, and many girlfriends that she remained friends with through out the years. She married Ross , December 3, 1937, in her sister's home.

Nicki and Ross made their home in Baytown for many years. They had 2 children, Sandra and Gary. Nicki worked until she had children, then was very active in the First Christian Church, was a homemaker , mother and always remained friends with the girlfriends who became Coffee Club. The women met once a month in each others homes. Nicki loved being a homemaker. She sewed beautifully, played the piano, and loved entertaining. She was room mother at school several times sewed costumes, clothing for the children, and draperies for the home. Nicki was a chaperon on a trip from Baytown to NYC for Gary's accordion band and she and Ross attended every high school foot ball game while Sandra was in high school, to see her drill team perform.

The family always went to Kerrville or Johnson City for summer vacations. Before the children, Nicki and Ross went to Stoneleigh Ranch and Prade Ranch with friends in the "west" Texas. Eventually, the twin sisters, brother Sonny and their families all lived in Baytown to work for Exxon. There were many Sunday family dinners that all enjoyed. Nicki always enjoyed visiting and keeping up with her family.

After Gary and Sandra left home, Nicki and Ross went on much longer trips across the USA and Mexico. In 1972, Ross retired and they built a new home in Lakeway and left Baytown. They continued traveling, almost every August to Vail Colorado and all parts west.

They always visited relatives along the way. Nicki also continued to meet the Coffee Club friends and husbands, even though they had scattered across Texas. But Nicki always returned to Baytown and Houston to visit all her family members. Nicki always loved music, and was a member of Sweet Adeline's, a womens choral group, in Houston and traveled to conventions with the group, for competitions.

After Nicki moved to Lakeway, she was a member of Women's Club, played tennis and was in a group of tennis ladies for many years. She was a member of Lakeway Church and sang in the choir. She continued entertaining family and friends. She and Ross had started ballroom dancing lessons in Baytown at the old Community House, and continued their dancing in Austin, where they participated in 2 dance clubs weekly. They had season tickets for Zachary Scott Theater many years, and even went to New York, on a tour, with a group of UT drama students. After 63 years of marriage, Ross passed away in 2000, and Nick continued to live in Lakeway with her son, and her daughter eventually moving here.

Nicki attended 3 Coffee Club reunions in recent years, and hosted the group in Lakeway, along with her friend, Lois Hamilton, 4 years ago. Family and friends always very important to her. She was 95 and the last survivor of the 8 Schubert children when she died. She was happy, easy going , kind , and yet at the same time, was really a rock of strength for her whole family.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Weed-Corley-Fish Lake Travis Chapel. Interment will be held at Forest Oaks Memorial Park.
