Terez Schúh was born on 13 Aug 1891 in the city of Sopron-Ödenburg, Ausztria–Magyarország (in present-day Sopron, Hungary).[1]

Her parents were András (also: Endre, Andreas) Schuh (also: Schúh, Schüh), a szőlőműves (viticulturist, grape specialist)[2] or gazda polgár (farmer & citizen) and his wife Erzsébet Drescher.[1] She was baptised on 19 Aug 1891 in the Lutheran church in central Sopron.[1] Their surnames suggest that they were ethnic-Germans.

They lived at Kis utca 26. Also known as Kleine Potschi Gasse and Kis Potschy utcza, the address of the residence is presently called Pócsi utca 26.) , only about 400 meters south, as the crow flies, from the Lutheran church.

She was one of several siblings:

  1. Teréz Katalin (b. 6 May 1886; d. 22 Apr 1889)[3]
  2. András Jósef / Andreas (b. 26 Aug 1887)[2]
  3. Tobias Pál (b. 5 Oct 1888)[4]
  4. Katalin (b. 3 Jan 1890; d. Sep 1890)[5]
  5. Terez / Theresia (b. 13 Aug 1891)
  6. Pál / Paul (b. 15 Sep 1893)[6]
  7. Károly József (b. 20 Aug 1895; d. 20 Aug 1899)[7][8]
  8. Erzsébet (b. 26 Feb 1897; d. 20 Jul 1897)[9][10]
  9. Erzsebet / Elisabeth (b. 18 Jul 1900)[11]

Thressa's father died on 20 Dec 1899 when she was just 8 years old.[12] Her mother was pregnant at the time, and her youngest sister Erzsebet was born seven months later.

Thressa Schuch ... She passed away in 1982. To her children and grandchildren, she was affectionately known as "Ma Patak". She had a thick Hungarian accent, loved to bake and enjoyed gardening.[13]

Immigration

Thressa emigrated to the United States from Cuxhaven on 1 Jun 1912 along with her daughter, Grace onboard the Ship called "Cleveland". They traveled in 3rd class accommodations. She lists her mother as the "nearest relative left behind", Elis Schuch, Sopron, Hungary.[14]
Trez was a passenger in Cuxhaven; Southampton; Cherbourg; to New York.[15]
Theresa was in a naturalization record (Final Papers).[16]

Marriage

Lorenz Patak married Thressa Schuch in Hungry prior to 1911. The 1930 Census states that she was 18 when she married. That would make the marriage about 1910. [17] Lorenz drowned in 1941. He was fishing on Rush Lake with another person when a surprise storm with a strong wind came up and turned their boat over. They were too far from land and neither knew how to swim. Both ended up drowning during the storm. Thressa never remarried.

Children

Lorenz and Thressa Schuch had three children: [17][18]
Grace Theresa Patak
Carl Lorens Patak
Warner Wilhelm Patak

US Census Records

Death and Burial

Thressa died on Mar. 17, 1982 in Forest Lake, Washington County, Minnesota.[22]
She is buried in the Stacy Cemetery in Stacy, Minnesota. [23]

Research Notes

  1. (Family Story) Thressa was known to constantly (and consistently) brag about dancing with Franz Joseph Karl Habsburg-Lothringen. No other information such as dates, location, event has been passed down. Thressa was 27 years old when Franz Joseph I died in 1916 but most recollections are that she danced with him prior to marriage about 1910. She was 18 years old in 1910.
  2. (Family Story) For unknown reasons, her Grandson, Pat Patak, has stated several times that she was a Gypsy from a Gypsy family in Hungary. He did spend a tremendous amount of time with his Grandmother as she was a de facto "babysitter". This could be accurate or just family folklore. Proven False
