Biography

Birth

Julia (Schultz) Krueger has German Roots.
According to her eldest daughter, Juliana Schultz, daughter of Friedrick Wilhelm Schulz and his wife Julianna Niederführ, was born 16 May 1877 in or near the town of Bruerizyn, in the province of Brandenberg, Prussia. This was an area that had been part of Poland and would later be part of Poland again. The Polish spelling of the town name is Byuozizyn.[1]

Note: The spelling of the town names may not be correct as I have not been able to find either name on any map. It might be Brzyszewo as there is a community of that name near the community of Chodecz where I have found reference to a marriage record of her parents. Early Life

Juliana had one older sister, Rosalie, who lived to adulthood. She is believed to have had several older siblings who died young.[1] She also had a couple of younger siblings who lived to adulthood.[1]

Her father was injured when an elevator fell on him and knocked him into the elevator shaft in a factory that made sugar from beets. The accident crushed his chest, and he spent 13 weeks in the hospital recovering from the injury. Even after he was released from the hospital, Juliana's father could no longer do the hard labor which had been his livelihood. Since there was no workers compensation insurance in those days, the economic impact on the family was severe. Juliana's mother caught and sold fish to raise what income she could. Most of Juliana's siblings except the youngest ones had to quit school and find work. Juliana continued at school but had to do field work in the hours she was not in school.[2]

Marriage and Family Life

On 25 Mar 1900, at the Evangelical Lutheran church in Pudewitz, Kries Posen, Prussia (in German) or Pobiedziska, poznański (in Polish), Juliana married Rudolf Krueger, son of Wilhelm Krueger and Auguste Ringe.[2][1] Rudolph and Julia had six children:

  • Agnes Marie Krueger was born 15 May 1901 in Pudewitz[1][3]
  • Herta Krueger was born 12 Mar 1904 in Pudewitz and was baptized on 1 Apr 1905 in Pudewitz. She died 1 Aug 1905 in Pudewitz.[1]
  • Gustave Krueger was born 18 Apr 1905 in Pudewitz and died before 1911, probably on 12 May 1909[1]
  • Freida Krueger was born 29 May 1907 in Segenshof, Posen-Ost, Prussia (now Rzegnowo, Poland)[1][4]
  • Anna Bertha Krueger was born 9 Sep 1912 in Toledo, Ohio and died there 29 Nov 1921[1][5]
  • George Krueger was born 26 Mar 1916 in Toledo, Ohio and baptized 14 May 1916 at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Toledo, Ohio[1][6]

Immigration

In the summer of 1911, Rudolph, his wife Julia, his daughter Agnes and his daughter Frieda left Segenshof, traveled to Bremen, boarded the ship Rhein which sailed from Bremen to Baltimore and then traveled on to Defiance, Ohio[7] where they joined Rudolph's sister Emilie Marie Krueger who was married to John Gottlieb Brandt.[1] The family lived for two months with Rudolf's sister and brother-in-law on the River Road in Defiance, Ohio on a pretty farm on a hill facing the Maumee River. Rudolf Krueger got work right away making forms for pouring cement for the Independence Dam. When the work was finished, the family moved to Toledo, Ohio where it would be easier for a carpenter to find work.[2] At one point, he worked as a carpenter for the Henry J. Speaker Co.[2] In Toledo, they lived at 1034 Blum Street.[8][9][10]

Death and Burial

Julia Krueger died on the 14 Jul 1959 in Toledo, Ohio after a long illness.[11] Her daughter Agnes stayed with her caring for her for several months during her last illness.[2] She is buried in Forest Cemetery in Toledo, Ohio with her husband and her daughter, Anna Bertha Krueger, next to her.[12]
