Harry was born on 10 March 1860, just over a year before the beginning of the American Civil War, in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest of five children born to Levi Schultz and Caroline Warg.
Harry's father, Levi, was the great-grandson of Gottfried Schultz (1717-1779), who emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1749 from Lower Silesia in the Habsburg Monarchy. Gottfried had been a member of the Moravian Brethren, who set up a community in and around Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The ancestry of Harry's mother Caroline is uncertain.
When Harry was 2 and a half years old, he lost two of his siblings -- Adelaide (8) and Samuel (4) -- in a little over 5 weeks at the end of 1862.
At the time of the 1870 US federal census, Harry was 10 years old and living with his parents, his older brother William (17), and his older sister Mary (18), her husband Edwin Koken and her daughter Adelaide (3).
Harry had an eighth grade education[1], so he probably completed his schooling in 1874 or 1875.
Harry's mother died in 1875 when Harry was 15, and his older brother William died 2 years later. In 1878, his father married again, and his half-brother Charles was born a year later. By 1880, Harry had moved 400 miles west to Copley Township in Summit County, Ohio, where he worked as a farm laborer and lived with Edward Valentine (54) and his family.
He died on 18 February 1943 in Barberton, Ohio.
