  • A Tragic End of Life

STRANGE SUDDEN DEATHS AT TANUNDA. AN AGED COUPLE FOUND DEAD IN BED. Tanunda, August 8th 1887 Intelligence was received this morning that Gottlieb Schulz, aged 78, and his wife, aged 77, of Walton, were found dead in bed this morning. Both attended church in Nain yesterday, and returned in their usual health, partook of tea, and retired to bed. This morning a son noticed the lamp still burning in their bedroom. He knocked, and on not receiving a reply forced the door, and found both his parents dead. Dr. Altmann was sent for, but refused to give a certificate of death. The police were sent for, and an inquest will be held to-morrow. Tanunda, August 9. A coronial enquiry into the causes attending the deaths of Gottlieb and Hedwig Schultz, of Walton, was held by Mr. J. Basedow to-day. Mr. Walden was foreman of the jury. After a deal of evidence had been taken it was found necessary to have a post-mortem examination, which was performed by Dr. Altmann, and conclusively showed that death was caused by charcoal gas, which accidently escaped from the stove flue used in the bedroom. In both cases the jury found in accordance with medical testimony, adding as a rider "that it is desirable to make more publicly known the danger arising from this source to avert future fatalities."[3]

Died: on 08 August 1887 in Walton (near Marananga), South Australia of carbon monoxide poisoning. (1)

Burial

Place of burial: on 10 August 1887, in Nain Cemetery (near Greenock), South Australia, Australia
