  • Within two or three years after the founding of Kerrville, incoming families began to move further up the Guadalupe valley, the first settlers stopping at what was then known as the forks of the Guadalupe because of the junction in that locality of the North and South forks of the river. These first families began to farm and raise livestock. Within a short time there were sawmill, a grist mill and a cotton gin. Some of the first settlers were members of the following families: Morriss, Joy, Taylor, Anderson, Byas, Merritt, Hope, Davis, Tegenaer, Hardin, New, Sherman, Alexander, Sublett, Wachter, Schumacher, Eller and Baldwin.
