Friedrich "Fred" Schuppe was born 24 May 1886 in Grimm, Russia. According to family records, his father's name was Jakob, but according to the 1897 Grimm census, it was Johann Friedrich. Family records also show his mother's name as Margaret Hable, but, unless she was from another village, it was probably Margaretha Happel. Both surnames sound nearly identical when spoken, and the correct spelling of the surname may have been an issue with those who initially recorded names and vital details at the time she immigrated to the United States. There were no Hable families in Grimm, but there were several Happel families, all related, living in Grimm.
