Research Notes

Family records identify his father as Jakob Schuppe. All Schuppes descend from Wilhelm Schuppe, family #69 in the 1798 census. He had a son, Georg Jakob Schuppe, whose two sons represent the split of the family into two branches:

Family #80 in the 1834 census
Family #86 in the 1857 census
Family #82 in the 1834 census
Family #88 in the 1857 census

The father of Johann Friedrich Schuppe of this profile is from one of those family lines. One man is his father, and the other is his uncle. His name has a Jakob in it, which narrows down the possibilities. To narrow that down even more, I made this assumption:

  • The correct Jakob had to be at least 17 years old to have a child in 1863, giving him a minimum birth year of 1846: 1863-17=1846.
  • Then I subtracted 1846 from 1857 to get his age at the time of the 1857 census: 1857=1846=11.
  • This means his father had to have been at least 11 years old in the 1857 census.

Here are the men named Jakob Schuppe who were at least 11 years old in the 1857 Grimm census. [3]

Family #86

  1. Philipp Jakob Schuppe, 42 years old, wife Katharina Elisabeth was 40 years old, so she would have been 46 years old at the time of Johann Friedrich's birth
  2. Johann Jakob Schuppe, 11 years 6 months old, he would have been between 17 and 18 at the time of Johann Friedrich's birth
  3. Johann Jakob Schuppe, 25 years old, he would have been 30 years old at the time of Johann Friedrich's birth, wife Katharina, age 21, she would have been 26 at the time of Johann Friedrich's birth

Of these three possibilities, number 3 can be eliminated because his wife's name was not Elisabeth.

Family #88

  1. Johann Jakob Schuppe, 20 years old, he would have been 25 at the time of Johann Friedrich's birth
  2. Georg Jakob Schuppe, 17 years old, he would have been 22 at the time of Johann Friedrich's birth

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jakob by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jakob:
