Obituary
Mrs. Lena Klafehn, 88, passed away Wednesday evening, December 1, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albert Rath of Redman Road, Hamlin.
She was stricken with a heart attack about two weeks ago and confined to bed and then developed a heavy cold. It appears that she was recovering, but on Saturday night, November 27, she suffered a shock and remained unconscious until the end.
Mrs. Klafehn was born in Pomeran [sic], Germany, on December 22, 1859, and began supporting herself at the early age of eleven years. She came to America when she was 18 years old and married the late John M. Klafehn on December 31, 1879.
An industrious and thrifty woman, the deceased was noted many years ago for carding her own wool, which she spun into yarn to make stockings for her children, and for the quantities of comforters which she took great pleasure in making. At the age of 72 she started work on her 76th comforter. In addition to these accomplishments, Mrs. Klafehn had made over 100 braided rugs.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. John Diedrich and Mrs. Albert Rath, both of Hamlin, Mrs. William Bonke of Kendall and Mrs. Albert Graupman of Clarkson; eight sons, Walter of Hilton, Leo of North Greece, Frank, William and Luther of Walker, and John, Hugo and Arthur of Hamlin; 52 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albert Rath of Redman Road, Hamlin, Saturday afternoon, December 4, at 1:30 and from St. John's Lutheran Church, Hamlin, at 2 o'clock. Interment was in Lakeside Cemetery.
