Moritz was probably born between 1857 and 1863 (see Notes) somewhere in the Russian Empire. His father is believed to be Schmuel Halevi Schwartz.
Moritz married Leah Gitel Vaynbaum in Russia and they had at least ten children (see Notes).
Moritz and Leah Gitel immigrated to the United States, probably in 1880[2]
or 1881.[3]
They were known as Morris and Lena in the United States.
Morris may be the Morris Schwartz who became a naturalized United States citizen October 5, 1888.[1]
In 1900, Morris (age 37) and Lena (age 37) lived on Ridge Street in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States with children David (age 19), Max (age 16), Eva (age 15), Harry (age 12), Joseph (age 9), Bertha (age 6), Dora (shown as Della", age 4), and newborn Lilly (shown as Libbi"). Morris was a tailor, David and Max were porters, and Eva was a seamstress.[2]
In 1910, Morris (age 51) and Lena (age 51) lived at 280 Broome Street in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States with children Max (age 26), Ira (age 22), Harry (age 20), Joseph (age 18), Bertha (age 15), Dora (age 13), and Lilly (age 10). Boarders Jacob Goldstein (age 40) and Sam Goldstein (age 25) also lived with the family. Morris was a storekeeper at a tea store, Harry was a shipping clerk, Joseph was a delivery clerk at a lunch counter, Jacob owned a saloon, and Sam was a delivery clerk on a newspaper route.[3]
