Citizen of Allmendingen in the parish of Munsingen, Canton Bern, Germany. He was a carpenter living in Gurzelen near Seftigen, Canton Bern. Married Anna of Kienruti-Kirchdorf.
On April 21, 1933 he left Wattenvil to emigrate to America. He sailed on a French ship from Le Havre, stayed in New York 2 days and then took a steamboat to Albany, thence by Erie Canal to Buffalo. He took another steamboat to Cleveland and then by canal boat to Lockport (south part of New Philadelphia, Ohio) and arrived at his new home on August 23, 1833.
