Biography

Mrs. Jacqueline "Jackie" Schweitzer Matthews, 84, of Walkersville, died Thursday, May 29, 2014, under hospice care, at Northampton Manor Health Care Center, Frederick, after an extended illness. Born September 28, 1929 in Washington, D.C., she was daughter of the late Christian F. and Nellie Slye Schweitzer. She was the wife of John Tankard Matthews who died in 2008. Mrs. Matthews was a 1947 graduate of Calvin Coolidge High School, Washington, D.C. She was a member of Doubs-Epworth United Methodist Church and was employed at Hess's Department Store, Frederick, until its closing in 1993. She was a life member of both Carroll Manor Fire Co. and New Midway Fire Co., a member of the ladies auxiliary of Carroll Manor and a past member of the Linganore Grange #410. She enjoyed flowers, needlepoint and cooking and was known for her pies and fudge. Surviving are two nephews, Paul Schweitzer and wife Taina and Robert Schweitzer; a niece, Jane Schweitzer and husband Steven; her good friend and caregiver, Helen P. Eyler of Union Bridge; devoted cousins and a daughter and a grandson. She was predeceased by a brother, Christian Schweitzer.
