Biography

Volga German
Johann (Schwimle) Schwemmler was a Volga German.
Johann (Schwimle) Schwemmler has German Roots.

Family 42-14 in The Immigration of German Colonists to Denmark and Their Subsequent Emigration to Russia in the Years 1759-1766.

Family B-1550 in The Immigration of German Colonists to Denmark and Their Subsequent Emigration to Russia in the Years 1759-1766.

Family #64 in the 1867 Laub census.

Johann Schwimle is identified in the 1767 Laub census as a widower from Holstein. The mention of Holstein was the clue that he was actually one of the Volga Germans who immigrated first to Denmark, and then to Russia. While he and his family were in Holstein, his wife died, thus the reference to him being a widower from Holstein.

Danish records show that Johann Schwemle immigrated to Denmark 09 May 1762. There were two adults and four children in his party. They left the processing center in Altona on 17 May 1762 and arrived in Flensburg on 22 May 1762. The family were considered reserve colonists in the area of Tondern. They left the area by 20 December 1765, but there is no notation of where the family went. Part of the reason is probably due to the fact that his surname is spelled or misspelled multiple ways, making it difficult to follow his path to Russia.

The 1767 Laub census refers to Johann Schwimle as a widower from Holstein. This suggests that his unnamed wife passed away while the family lived in Denmark. Additionally, only one of the four children who traveled with him to Denmark survived the journey to the Volga Region of Russia. She is named in this source as Johanna Elisabeth Schwimle, age 12.

By 1770, Johann had married again, a woman named Maria, born in 1740. Daughter Anna Elisabeth was born in 1771, and son Johann Ludwig was born in 1774. They are probably listed in the 1775 Laub or Dinkel census, but I don't have a copy of these censuses to confirm any details.

Johann passed away between 1774 and 1797, and his wife married widower Marx Mus. The couple is listed in the 1798 Dinkel Census, page 356, family #Dn09. Son Johann Ludwig lived with Marx and Maria Mus, along with his wife Anna Margaretha Bier and their son Johann Michael. In the 1798 Dinkel census, the family's surname is spelled Schwemmler.

Daughter Anna Elisabeth married Matthias Meisner from Grimm, and they had one child, Markus Georg Meisner, born 1793. Her half sister, Johanna Schwemmler, married Paul Müller, and the sisters lived next to each other at the time of the 1798 Dinkel census, family Dn30 and family Dn31. It's not clear if Johanna had any children, either from a previous marriage or from her marriage to Paul Müller. No children lived with the family in 1798.
