Adoph was born in 1875. He grew up in Hamburg-Barmbek. His father, Louis Gustav Schönfelder, was a carpenter ("Tischler") and a constable ("Konstabler"). Adolph's mother, Maria Sophia, née Koch, worked as a maid.[1]

Adolph became a carpenter ("Zimmerer"). He married first Auguste. They had two children:[2]

  • Ernst (born 13 Jun; died 3 Jul 1918),
  • Cäcilie (born abt. 18 Aug 1902), married Walther Victor.

In 1901 Adolph Schönfelder became a member of the SPD, in 1919 of the Hamburg Parliament ("Hamburgische Bürgerschaft"), and in 1925 of the government of Hamburg ("Hamburger Senat").[1]

Adolph married second Minna Prill. They had two children:[2]

  • Thea (16 Feb 1925 - 25 Jul 2010), became a doctor and a professor,[3][4][5][6][7][8]
  • Ernst (29 Nov 1927 - 25 Feb 2021), became a musician.[9][10]

In June 1933, Schönfelder was arrested and accused of high treason and treason against the country. Although he was not tried, he had to renounce the SPD and was under surveillance.[1]

After World War II, he was appointed Vice Mayor ("Zweiter Bürgermeister") of Hamburg. In 1946 he was elected President of the Hamburg Parliament. In 1948 and 1949, he was the President by right of age, Father of the House ("Alterspräsident") of the Federal German Parliamentary Council ("Parlamentarischer Rat") and, together with Konrad Adenauer and Hermann Schäfer, drafted the Basic Law ("Grundgesetz") for the Federal Republic of Germany.[1] On 23 May 1949, as first vice-president of the parliamentary council, he signed the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany together with Konrad Adenauer and Hermann Schäfer.[11]

In 1900, he is listed as a worker ("Arbeiter") and as residing at Lohkoppelstraße 27, Hamburg.[12] In 1910, he is listed as a carpenter ("Zimmermann") and as residing at Lohkoppelstraße 50, Hamburg.[13] In 1920, he is listed as a carpenter ("Zimmermann") and member of the Hamburg Parliament ("Mitglied der Bürgerschaft") and as residing at Lohkoppelstraße 50, Hamburg.[14] In 1930, he is listed as a senator ("Senator") and member of the Hamburg Parliament ("Mitglied der Bürgerschaft") and as residing at Moorende 29, Hamburg.[15] In 1940, he is listed as a senator (Ret.) ("Senator a. D.") and as residing at Perthesweg 8, Hamburg.[16] In 1947 and 1950, he is listed as a president ("Präsident") and as residing at Olendörp 27, Hamburg.[17][18] In 1955, he is listed as President of the Hamburg Parliament ("Präsident der Bürgerschaft") and as residing at Moorende 29, Hamburg.[19] In 1960, he is listed as President of the Hamburg Parliament ("Präsident der Bürgerschaft") and as residing at Kleiststraße 7, Hamburg.[20] In 1965, he is listed as a member of the Hamburg Parliament ("Bürgerschaftsmitglied") and as residing at Kleiststraße 7, Hamburg.[21]

Schönfelder was an honorary citizen of Hamburg, the highest decoration of the city-state.[11][22] He passed away in 1966 and was buried at Friedhof Ohlsdorf in Hamburg.[23][24]
