Biography

Stephen Jesse Scobee was born March 14, 1850, in Putnam county, Missouri a son of Stinson Scobee and his second wife, Nancy Ann Coffee Stephen is found on the United States Census, the year he was born, living in Dodge county, Missouri, with his parents. [1] Note: Dodge County existed from 1846 to 1853. It was originally created from part of western Putnam County and unorganized territory to the west. In 1849, the northern half became part of Iowa after the U.S. Supreme Court decision settling the Iowa and Missouri boundary dispute.

Stephen's father, Stinson died April 22, 1863. On the 1870 Census of Elm Township, Putnam county, Missouri, Stephen's mother, Nancy (Coffee) Scobee born circa 1820, in Kentucky, is listed head of household. Stephen, listed "S.J.Scobee" is the eldest child, age 20, living in the home with five younger siblings, all listed by their initials. [2]

On October 13, 1870, in Putnam county, Missouri, Stephen married Matilda Ellen Erichson/Erickson, born July 30, 1854, a daughter of John Erichson and Delila Jane Berry. Stephen and Matilda became the parents of as many as ten children, born in Missouri. [3]

Stephen is named as the father of the bride at his daughter, Susan A Scobee's marriage to Peter Severence Peterson, on February 28, 1895, in Adair county, Missouri. [4]

Stephen died December 8, 1910, at the age of 60, in Flagler, Kit Carson county, Colorado and is buried in the Flagler Cemetery. [5]
