" In Aug. 1746 the fort was attacked by a party of French and Indians, numbering more than 700. Defending it were 22 men; a small number of women and children were also present." After two days of fighting, Bosse explained, the French asked for the fort's surrender, negotiated by Hawks and Rev. John Norton, who later published a narrative of his ensuing captivity. Hawks and the others were marched to Canada as prisoners, but they were released and returned to Boston a year later. Only one defender had been killed."[3]
