Research

The 2018 Collaborative Process Project includes William Scott (1720?-1794), his wife Lucy (Maiden Name Unknown) (1722?-1805) and their twelve children as listed in William Scott's 1793/1794 Will of Bedford county, Virginia. Research notes for William Scott, Sr. can be found on Space:Supplemental William Scott 1720-1794 of Bedford, Virginia. The first stage was to collect as much tree info and family history as possible, without regard for quality of support. The second stage was to evaluate that info to direct more specific searches for sources. The third stage involved starting a rough outline for the biography and creating source citations. The fourth stage is continued source searches, bio and source editing and moving what is left of the "research" section to the bottom of the profile. The fifth, and last, stage is to complete our "reasonably exhaustive research," finalize bio and sources, and to make changes to the data fields in compliance with sources and biography. The 2018 Collaborative Process on the family of William and Lucy Scott has expanded its scope several times. It became apparent that William's origins were in Maryland and we needed to conduct research in the records of that Colony. At the same time it has been found that there are so few supporting records for William's children that we have necessarily began conducting research on his grandchildren in order to provide collateral support to the entire family line.

The following are examples of tree information from many locations, which we can compare and analyze. Are there any others that anyone knows about or would like to add?

Information for Floyd Cochran Kriste (View posts) Posted: 17 Aug 1999 12:25AM My great grandfather is the Floyd Cochran that married Phoebe T. Scott in 1884. His father's name (according to family) is a Marvel Cochran who married a woman by the maiden name of Hale. Phoebe's parents are Mitchell T. Scott (born 1842) who married Malinda J. Reynolds in 4-30-1857. I have no parents listed for Malinda but Mitchell's parents were Axton Scott (born 1814) and Ruth Ann Blevins (born 1821) in Scott Co.,VA. Axton and Ruth were married in 10-27-1836. Axton's parents were William (Billie?) Scott and Elisabeth McCoy (born 1786). Elisabeth's father was William McCoy Sr. (born 1773). (the feuding McCoys). William Scott, I'm guessing, was name after his father and his mother's first name may be Lucy (born in Bedford Co., VA?)

After that, and when a consensus is reached on whether a good enough collection of info and records have been assembled, the conclusions which a greed on may be moved to the data fields above.

  • Axton Scott found on FamilySearch.org

This story is a theory about Axton Scott and Dorcas Wright family was found under Axton Scott's name in Family Search. (Similar to RootsWeb above.) Axton Scott and Dorcas Wright found in "Sorting of some of the Wrights of Southern Virginia," by Robert N. Grant, 2003, pp. 4520-4527: Dorcas Wright Scott and Axton Scott Web Page: https://dcms.lds.org/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE922356 Document reads, p. 4520-4521:
There is no direct evidence that Dorcas, the wife of Axton Scott, was also the daughter of 1763 Thomas Wright and Mary (____ ) Wright. However, the circumstantial evidence is substantial and makes this identification highly probable.
First, the given name Dorcas is relatively rare at this time in Bedford County. Virginia. Second, the Littleberry Wright Declaration set forth above stated that one of the daughters of 1763 Thomas Wright married a Scott.
Third, Axton Scott's wife was named Dorcas.
Fourth, the age of that wife Dorcas is consistent with her being a daughter of 1763 Thomas Wright. She was married probably in 1776 or before and, therefore, would have been born probably before 1759.
Fifth, Axton Scott owned land adjacent to that of 1815 Joseph Wright of Bedford County, a son of 1763 Thomas Wright, and sold that land to 1815 Joseph Wright and later purchased land adjacent to 1803 John Wright of Bedford County, another son of 1763 Thomas Wright.
And sixth, 1763 Thomas Wright had a John Cemp in his household in 1737, 1815 Joseph Wright of Bedford County married as his first wife Elizabeth Kemp, and Axton and Dorcas Scott named their last son Kemp Scott. This combination of circumstances makes it probable that Dorcas Scott was Dorcas (Wright) Scott and the daughter of 1763 Thomas Wright of Bedford County and Mary (___ ) Wright.
On December 21, 1776, at Bedford County, Virginia, D.B. 5/265 Axton Scott purchased 74 acres of land from Thomas and Ann Day
page 4522:
On February 28, 1780, at Bedford County, Virginia, D.B. 10/78 Axton Scott purchased 182 acres of land from Anthony Pate
In their letter dated January 5, 1999, W. S. "Buddy" and Linda Grubbs stated that the Bedford County, Virginia, Personal Property Tax Lists listed Axton Scott from 1782 to 1786.
page 4523:
On August 4, 1786, at Bedford County, Virginia, D.B. 7/662 Axton Scott sold 182 acres of land on which he then resided to Rowland Wheeler
page 4524:
On November 25, 1786, at Bedford County Virginia, D.B. 7/676 Axton Scott sold 74 acres of land to 1815 Joseph Wright of Bedford County
page 4525:
This represented the sale of all of the land of Axton Scott, probably preparatory to his move from Bedford County, Virginia. In their letter dated January 5, 1999, W. S. "Buddy" and Linda Grubbs stated that the Bedford County, Virginia, Personal Property Tax Lists listed Axton Scott in 1787.
In their letter dated January 5, 1999, W. S. "Buddy" and Linda Grubbs stated that on October 13, 1789, at Washington County, Virginia, W.B. 1/151 Axton Scott, spelled Aclion Scott, was mentioned in the Inventory & Appraisement of the estate of Thomas Stuart.
In their letter dated January 5, 1999, W. S. "Buddy" and Linda Grubbs enclosed a copy of Washington County, Virginia, Land Grants 1753-1781 which listed a survey dated February 11,1794, for Dorcus Scott
page 4526-4527:
In their letter dated January 5, 1999, W. S. "Buddy" and Linda Grubbs enclosed a copy of letter written by Ralph Petty Scott, a son of Kemp Scott and grandson of Axton Scott and Dorcas (Wright) Scott, and now in the possession of William Jewell College, which provided as follows: "Elder Kemp Scott,
This faithful Servant and minister of Jesus Christ died at his residence in Carroll County Missouri on the 13 day of April 1864 he was born in Washington County Virginia on the 20 day of June 1790 his Father Axton Scott died when he was about Eighteen months old leaving his Mother Dorcas with Eight children and but little means for their Support or Education his Mother died Shortly after the Father and he was put under the care of a Brother in law where he remained until 1810 when he Emigrated to Barren County Ky...."
This record indicates that Axton Scott died in about December 1791 or January 1792. The survey records set forth above indicate in conjunction with this letter indicate that Dorcas Scott lived until about late 1794 or 1795. And the letter indicates that Dorcas (Wright) Scott and Axton Scott had eight children.
In their letter dated January 5, 1999, W. S. "Buddy" and Linda Grubbs enclosed family group sheets which stated that the children of Axton and Dorcas Scott were the following: 1) Catharine (Scott) Lockhart, born about 1777 at Bedford County, Virginia,
2) Polly (Scott) Brumlett, born about 1778 probably at Bedford County, Virginia,
3) Lucretia "Lucy" (Scott) Williamson, born about 1780 probably at Bedford County, Virginia,
4) John Scott, born about 1782 at Bedford County, Virginia,
5) Thomas Jordan Scott, born about 1784 at Bedford County, Virginia,
6) William Scott, born between 1784 and 1786 probably at Bedford County, Virginia,
7) Evan Scott, born about 1788 possibly at Washington County, Virginia, and
8) Kemp Scott, born on June 20, 1790, at Washington County, Virginia.

My ancestor was William Scott, born about 1785 to Axton Scott and Dorcas Wright Scott. Both Axton and Dorcas died young leaving some orphan children including William. Since Lucy's husband Williamd1794 had died, I believe that 10 year old William may have been taken in by his grandmother Lucy. The next firm information regarding William I have is his presence in Floyd County Kentucky (Gulnar) about 1805. William had married or married shortly after Elizabeth McCoy. They raised a large family including my next ancestor, Andrew Scott who was born at Gulner about 1810.

Birth

Born 1755 in Bedford county, Virginia.
Because all of the birth years for Axton and all of his siblings are estimates, we waited to suggest our conclusions until we got a little farther into the collaboration process for all of them and then tried to standardize, or at least define the estimate parameters. We looked at the possibilities of putting them in the same birth order as their father's 1793 will and have yet to see any conflicts. Axton's brother Joseph is one of children that we have a definite birth date for, 1757, and Axton preceded Joseph in the Will and birth order, making our estimate for Axton easy, 1755. (Note by [[Lake-1774|Steve Lake 18Jun2018)

The following are examples of other estimates we found, included here for comparison. Keep in mind that little or no explanation or reasoning was included with these estimates, therefore it is impossible to narrow down the range of 1748-1762.

Death and Burial

Axton died after 1793, the date of his father's Will. Death place remains unproven, likely Washington county, but possibly Bedford county, both in Virginia. The fact that Axton is listed in his father's 1793 Will, means that he was alive as of 7Dec1793. Therefore the 1792 dates are invalid and the 1794 dates are possible. Until a source for death is found, a better death date would be "after 1793." (Note by [[Lake-1774|Steve Lake 18Jun2018)

I am Donald Scott, very likely descendant of William Scott who died in Bedford County Virginia. I found very close DNA match with Jonathon Nix of England, UK indicating a strong possibility that William(d1794) may have had origins in England rather than Scotland

Scott-25086 and Scott-13160 appear to represent the same person because: Birth year the same. Scott-18672 has no other vitals. Axton is a very unusual name. Probably a match. Don't see why they were rejected. It may be that the father's - William - have such different birth years. 1720 and 1732 are both used on various trees for this person. 1732 is more widely accepted (I don't think there is a source for birth year) Birth place is probably Scotland and this is the Scott immigrant.

The follow up since 2018 has been an organized, comprehensive and collaborative research project on the family of William and Lucy Scott of Bedford County, Virginia. Many hours have been spent collecting family history and tracking down sources, both primary and secondary, and this work has been shown on all the respective profiles. This broad, inclusive approach is paying off in improving date estimates and life events for all members of this family. Our first objective was to use sources to prove as much as possible, then use those sources and reasoning to reach plausible conclusions for each family member. One of the first reasonable assumptions was using the listed order of children in the 1793 Will of William Scott as actual birth order. The pension records of Joseph (b:1757) and Obediah (b:1764) (consecutive sons 8 & 9) revealed a seven year gap, which makes it impossible for one woman to have had twelve children. We found clues that other historians believed that, while Lucy was William's widow, he had an earlier wife who died in Maryland, where the first six children were born. Birth order and two mothers of William's children are probably the two biggest issues that our project has defined through the use of sources and a comprehensive approach. It may take several more years to uncover any further information regarding William Scott in Maryland, which is where our project is going. Review and comments are always welcome.

Since this profile has several managers, I will leave one message here instead of sending multiple private ones. Recent activity on FamilySearch.org prompted me to do some research in order to have valid reasons to restore order and reason. While it is fresh, I would like to do some parallel work here on WT. I would like to add info to the bio for review and comment. Consensus can then be transferred to the data fields if needed. I would like to proceed as soon as I receive at least one response. Any suggestions?

Scott-15403 and Scott-13160 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife. Insufficient information/source material to distinguish the two.
