Annie was born in 1838, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Her father's family were lapsed Quakers; her mother's were recent immigrants from Northern Ireland. She lost her first four children in their early childhood, but improvements in water and sanitation allowed her and her husband to raise seven to adulthood, each one remarkable in his or her own way.
Annie and Frank had no liking for slavery or war, but they got through the civil war years. Times were hard for everyone. She did her best to educate her daughters as well as her sons.
In her old age, she moved to Portsmouth, Va., to spend her final years with her eldest daughter. She passed away in 1920.
