Mary Scott was born about 1828 in Stockport Cheshire [1][2][3][4]
She was the daughter of Adam Scott, a stone-mason, and Mary (Stokes) Scott.[5][6]. [7]
Mary was the oldest of six children in the Scott household, living at 29 Harding Street, Walton on the Hill, West Derby, Liverpool.[3]
She had three marriages and two children.
Mary Scott married William Caldwell, a policeman, at St Nicholas church in Liverpool, on 13 May 1850.[5] At the time of their marriage the couple lived at Crosshall Street, possibly the home of Andrew Caldwell who was one of the witnesses.[5] Soon after their marriage they moved in with Mary's mother Sarah Scott at 78 Harding Street Sarah Scott.[4]
William and Mary Caldwell had one child, a daughter named Mary Elizabeth Caldwell, who was baptized at St. Peter's, Liverpool on 14 November 1852.[8].
William passed away before 7 April 1861 [9] Mary took on work as a nurse in the household of H. Woodall, a wholesale grocer, at 28 W??tree Rd. [10]Their daughter, Mary Elizabeth (age 8) went to live with Sarah (Stokes) Scott at 24 Harding Street, West Darby.[11]
On 10 April 1863, Mary married Hugh Robertson, a mariner, residing at 44 Watkinson Street.[6]
On 31 July 1864 Hugh and Mary christened their daughter Sarah Hannah Robertson (on the same day as William and Sarah Saul christened Walter Saul, and James Tyrer and Alice Caldwell (Mary's sister and brother-in-law) christened Agnes Caldwell. All three families gave their residence as 204 Faulkner Street.[12][13]
It is assumed that Hugh passed away before 1871, as by that time Mary was again working as a nurse, this time in the large well-to-do household of Gustav Busch, a merchant at Haymere Glen.[14] Her two daughters were again living with Sarah Scott.[15].
Mary (Scott Caldwell) Robertson has not been found in the 1881 census but it can be assumed she was back in service, as her youngest daughter, Sarah Hannah was living his the household of Mary's oldest daughter Mary Elizabeth Quarill.[16] On 7 November 1881, Mary (aged 53) married her third husband, William Wheelding, a widower at St. Clement, Toxteth Park. William was a Labourer, and the couple lived at 5 Bandyke Street. Her son-in-law, William Quarill was one of the witnesses.[7]. There is no record of Mary Wheelding after 1881, and no record was found which could indicate her date of death.
Andrew Caldwell, one of the witnesses at the marriage of William Caldwell and Sarah Scott, is of interest. It is not evident how he is related, but a search revealed an Andrew Caldwell in Crosshall street who is also a Cork Cutter. It is tempting to think he is somehow connected with Robert - perhaps a brother who shares the same trade. This must be further researched. There is also a George Caldwell in 2 Hughes Place Crosshall Str. born in Ireland. Is it simply co-incidence that the son of Robert Caldwell is living in an area where there is an Irish person sharing a name and trade with his father? Or was Robert Irish, and not disclosing this (for whatever reason) on the census?
Who was Agnes Caldwell who witnessed William's marriage? [5]
