2018 Collaborative Research Project is currently underway, involving the family of William and Lucy Scott. Details on this project and research notes for William Scott, Sr. may be found at Space:Supplemental William Scott 1720-1794 of Bedford, Virginia This profile is currently at Phase 3 of 5.

Research

The 2018 Collaborative Process Project includes William Scott (1720?-1794), his wife Lucy (Maiden Name Unknown) (1722?-1805) and their twelve children as listed in William Scott's 1793/1794 Will of Bedford county, Virginia. Research notes for William Scott, Sr. can be found on Space:Supplemental William Scott 1720-1794 of Bedford, Virginia. The first stage was to collect as much tree info and family history as possible, without regard for quality of support. The second stage was to evaluate that info to direct more specific searches for sources. The third stage involved starting a rough outline for the biography and creating source citations. The fourth stage is continued source searches, bio and source editing and moving what is left of the "research" section to the bottom of the profile. The fifth, and last, stage is to complete our "reasonably exhaustive research," finalize bio and sources, and to make changes to the data fields in compliance with sources and biography. The 2018 Collaborative Process on the family of William and Lucy Scott has expanded its scope several times. It became apparent that William's origins were in Maryland and we needed to conduct research in the records of that Colony. At the same time it has been found that there are so few supporting records for William's children that we have necessarily began conducting research on his grandchildren in order to provide collateral support to the entire family line.

The following are examples of tree information from many locations, which we can compare and analyze. Are there any others that anyone knows about or would like to add?

  • History of Washington County is important to be aware of, since boundaries changed several times. Washington County was formed by European Americans in 1776 from Fincastle County. It was named for George Washington, who was then commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. As with many other frontier counties, the boundaries and territory changed over the years. In 1786 the northwestern part of Washington County became Russell County. In 1814 the western part of what remained of Washington County was combined with parts of Lee and Russell counties to form Scott County. In 1832 the northeastern part of Washington was combined with part of Wythe County to form Smyth County. source: Wikipedia.

The the Scott's of Bedford county should not be confused with the Scott's of Dinwiddie county. The Scott's of Dinwiddie county were related to the famous General Winfield Scott.

Biography

In the Will of William Scott of Bedford county, Virginia, dated 7Dec1793, Peter is listed third and eleventh and assumed to be the next to youngest son of the twelve children of his father, William. There are several indicators that William's widow, Lucy, was his second marriage and not all twelve of the children were biologically hers. One indicator, being listed third, is that Peter's inheritance is more typical of a child who provided the care of his parents in their old age, instead of a daughter, in this case Sarah Lee, who may have been Lucy's step-daughter. He was given 200 acres of land by his father William nine years before the 1893 Will was written, with the stipulation that William and Lucy would live there for the rest of their lives.[1] Peter's birth is estimated at 1769 in some trees but his birth place is seldom listed. He was the son of William Scott and Lucretia "Lucy" James Scott. He had eleven other siblings as listed in his father's Will.[2]

His next older brother, Obediah, was about 17 years old when he served in the American Revolutionary War. If Peter was a year or two younger, it is doubtful that he served in that war, but unlikely because he would have turned 17 in 1783, the last year of the war. It is possible that he may have served in the War of 1812, as his older step-brother William did. Obediah's war pension statement says that he was born in Bedford county, Virginia, so it is probable that Peter was also born there a few years later. Another reason the this birth place was because his father has no other place of residence the latter half of his life.

"Holsten History" by Price 1913, says that Peter was born at Peaks of Otter in Bedford county, Virginia. His marriage is also listed, to Rachel Ann Newell Poston on 17Sep1803 in Washington county, Virginia.[3] She was the oldest child of William and Sarah Poston. She was born in Charles couny, Maryland Sept. 26, 1784 and died 8 June 1848.[4] They had six children; Sarah, William, Lucretia,[5] Priscilla, Stephen[6] and Peter, Jr. according to FamilySearch.org[7]

He lived in Washington county for the rest of his life. He is recorded there in the 1810,[8] 1820[9] and 1830 US Census[10]. Peter may have been accompanied by three of his brothers in Washington County, Virginia; Charles, Joseph and possibly Axton. When looking for records, it may be useful to keep these four brothers names in mind.

Peter died on 22Dec1836 in Saltville of Washington county, Virginia.[11] He was thought to have died before 6 January 1837.[12]

"Bedford county has no early records of six of the children of William Scott, Sr. vis: Charles, Evan, Jacob [sic. Joseph?], Obediah, Thomas and Sarah [Scott] Lee." The other six children (all sons) of William, Sr. [i.e. Axton, George, Peter, John, James and William] do have records in Bedford county and are listed with source references from "Early Bedford County Marriage" and "Early Bedford County Property Notes." The latter may also be known as "Bedford County Virginia Deed Book" in several volumes.
