Biography

James M. Scott was born in Calhoun County, Alabama on Thursday, 2 September 1852. He was the son of Jesse Scott and Senia Malone.

James first appeared on the 1860 Federal census for Township 15, Range 12, Calhoun County, Alabama in the household of his father Jesse M. Scott. James was recorded as Jas. Scott, age 8, male, born in Alabama, cannot read or write.

In 1866, Cleburne County was formed from part of Calhoun County, taking the Scott household with it.

James was again recorded in his father’s household on the 1870 Federal census of Township 15, Range 12, Cleburne County, Alabama. He was 18, white, male, born in Alabama, and attending school.

On the 1880 Federal census, James was again recorded in his father’s household in Cleburne County. He was white, male, age 28, single, employed as a farm laborer, and could not read or write.

In 1882, James served as the administrator of his father’s estate.

Circa 1892, James married Susan R. Hooper, the daughter of William R. Hooper and Mary Frances Junior. No record has been found – year estimated from 1900 Federal census.

On Wednesday, 23 March 1898, James was granted a warrant deed from the Choctaw, Oklahoma & Gulf Railroad Company for tracts 14 and 15 in block 1 of the Seminole Addition in Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma Territory. This became James and Susan’s residence at 241 S. Pennsylvania Ave.

On Monday, 16 January 1899, Susan gave birth to a baby girl who was given the name Rama Scott. This is the only confirmed child of James Scott, although a later record suggested that Susan may have had three children with James. Rama died on Sunday, 31 December 1899 and was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Shawnee.

James and Susan were enumerated on the 1900 Federal census in Shawnee. James listed as J. M. Scott, a white male, born September 1852, 47 years old, and married 8 years.

On Monday, 28 January 1901, James M. Scott died in Shawnee. The next day, he was interred beside his daughter at Fairview Cemetery.
