There is an article in the Pine County Courier, Sandstone, Pine County, Minnesota, dated March 20, 1919, that details his service in the war.

Franklin enlisted in the Marines in April 1917. He was injured in the line of duty on June 15, 1918, and admitted to American Red Cross Military Hospital #5 from field hospital #16. Cause of admission: Gassed in action, mustard gas, contact poisoning, inhalation. Returned to Duty, July 9, 1918

Death

Franklin was 49 when he passed away. He had been on a mission to Korea for the U.S. Army when he became seriously ill and was brought back to the United States for treatment six months before his death. He died at Walter Reid Hospital, Washington, D.C. after undergoing an operation. There are some who say he died of alcoholism and though from all stories, passed down, he was an alcoholic the attached letter from the VA shows that he did not die from alcoholism but rather a perforation of the stomach lining which lead to surgery in which he did not survive.
His body was brought back to Hibbing for burial.
