Biography

US Black Heritage Project
William Scott is a part of US Black heritage.

William Ira Scott was born in Rock Hill, York, South Carolina[1] on 7 July 1872.[2]

William married Lula Edwards in Danville, Virginia on 19 June 1911.[3] They had at least one daughter, Ira Delma.[4]

He registered for the draft on 12 September 1918.[2] He was working as a mechanic.[2]

Lula died in Norfolk, Norfolk, Virginia on 8 March 1919.[5]

William married Martha Ella (Motley) Boswell in Danville on 4 Sep 1919.[1] The couple would have two children: Wendell Oliver in 1921, and Martha Guelda in 1923.

About 1924 William, Martha, Delma, Wendell, Guelda, and Elizabeth (Martha's daughter from her first marriage) moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.[4]

According to Wendell's recollections to the author of the book Hard Driving, about 1926 William and Martha separated.[4] However, William was recorded on the 1930 U.S. census living in Pittsburgh with Martha, Delma, Guelda, and Elizabeth.[6]

Also in Hard Driving, Wendell tells a story about driving, after he got his license, to visit his father at Rock Hill.[4] It was the first time William had seen his son in nine years, according to the book. Wendell's recollections, which are difficult to reconcile with the 1930 census record, place William in South Carolina by at the latest 1937.

In the late 40s William fell ill, and lived for a time with Wendell and his family in Danville.[4] His leg developed gangrene and was amputated.[4]

William died in Great Falls, Chester, South Carolina on 17 May 1950.[7] He was interred at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Richburg, Chester, South Carolina on 20 May 1950.[7]
