Biography

Isabella Scott was born about 1796 in the county of Fife.

She married her husband George Sneddon in Dunfermline on September 21, 1822. George was a collier (coal miner) residing in Berrielaw, Dunfermline.^[1]

George Sneddon and Isabella Scott had 7 children baptized in total (all in Dunfermline), but only 4 lived to adulthood:

In the 1841 census, she was 45 years old and lived in Dunfermline with her 4 children.^[2]

Isabella died of cholera on October 6, 1849 in Dunfermline at about 50 years old.^[3] (Note: this burial record may or may not belong to her. It is not clear whether Isabella Scott is the deceased's married name or maiden name, and no spouse's name is given. The location given on the burial record, Baldridgeburn, is in Parkneuk, Dunfermline which is Isabella Scott's address in the 1841 census. Isabella is not found in the 1851 or 1861 census, so she died between 1841 and 1851.)

Research Notes

Unknown parents: In the 1841 census, Isabella Sneddon is living with her children and it shows her age is 45, making her born about 1796 in Fife. Her 1849 death record shows her age is 50, making her born about 1799. Neither her marriage record nor her death record show her parent's names. There are multiple potential baptism records. Considering her childrens' names, her parents could have been named William and Margaret but there are no Isabella Scotts baptized in the right time and place with parents named William and Margaret. Her baptism might have not been recorded. Without additional records, we can't be sure who her parents are.
