Another of the old band of pioneers of this district, Mrs. John Harwood, passed away rather suddenly on Sunday last. Until a few hours before her end deceased appeared in first class health, and on the previous day drove into Busselton, and in addition to visiting a number of friends, transacted a quantity of business. Early on Sunday she complained of feeling unwell, but an hour or two later livened up considerably. At about 2 p.m. another bad turn was experienced, and an hour later death came quite unexpectedly.
Mrs. Harwood was born at Wonnerup 65 years ago, and was the eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Scott, who were the original selectors of what is known as " Ridgeway Farm " at Quindalup. Just over forty-five years ago she married Mr. John Harwood, and took up her residence at Inlet Villa, where she has lived ever since. Of the Scott family, who were grandchildren of Elijah Dawson, of Waterloo fame, there are still living, Thomas (Quindalup), William (Kirupp), Elijah (Bunbury), Richard (Worsley), Arthur (Melbourne) and Mrs. A. House (Bunbury), Mrs. Adams and Mrs. King (Sharks Bay).
In addition to the husband five daughters, Mrs. H. Adams (Quindalup), Mrs. A. Hislop (West Midland), Mrs. J. Smith (Brunswick). Mrs. Delaporte (Capel), Mrs. G. Lowe (Busselton), and three sons, William, Clarence and Henry, with nearly thirty grandchildren, are left to mourn her loss.
The funeral took place at Busselton on Tuesday afternoon when the remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the Busselton cemetery. The Rev. H. S. Needham officiated at service held in St. Mary's Church and at the graveside. Residents from all parts of the district were present.
