The date and place of birth is not known. He died in 1813 near Elizabeth City, Pasquotank Co., North Carolina. He married Miriam Jackson on 30 December 1789 in Pasquotank Co., daughter of Simon Peter and Mary Jackson. They were parents of a son, Harvey Scott.
Following the death of his first wife about 1794, he remarried about 1795 to Mary "Polly" Jackson, daughter of Bailey and Miriam Jackson. Mary's relation to the first wife is uncertain. Marmaduke and Mary were parents of eight children: Olly Scott Sawyer, Miriam "Milly" Scott Etheridge, Nancy Scott Jones, Susannah "Susan" Scott*, Ammon Scott*, Anne Scott*, George W. Scott*,and Sophia Scott*. (*All believed to be minors when their father died except Sophia born after his death.)
Marmaduke served during the American Revolutionary War. When he enlisted August 3, 1776 his place of residence was listed as Middleborough, Massachusetts. Following his service in the war he is found acquiring land in 1784 in Pasquotank Co., NC. He continued to add land until he managed to attain a planter status with several hundred acres of land. In addition he owned Lot 54 in Elizabeth City. If he ever lived there is unknown. He was a slave owner and it is hoped that he did not miss treat them. Marmaduke Scott served six years as a member of the General Assembly of the State of North Carolina in the House. His political party is uncertain.
Marmaduke was several years older than his wife, Mary, and he died in 1813. He left his wife a life estate in his home plantation, and gave only token bequests to their eight children, and willed most all of his real estate to his son Harvey, his first born son and offspring of his first wife, Miriam. It is not certain if he was carrying out an old world practice or what, but their surely were some unpleasant feelings between Harvey and his step-mother.
