It is said that Jesse Scott was the son of a Pamunkey Indian. He was an accomlished musician, a violinist who led a well-known dance band throughout Virginia with his sons James and Robert. [1]

Following Thomas Jefferson's death in 1826, Jesse Scott's brother-in-law, Joseph Fossett, was freed from slavery by the terms of Jefferson's will. His wife Edy and their children were among the "130 valuable negroes" sold by the estate in January 1827. The task of bidding for Fossett's family fell to Jesse Scott, a free man of color and the husband of Joseph's free half sister, Sally Jefferson Bell. The Fossetts, Bells, and Scott families were only able to purchase Edith and her two youngest children (for $505).[2]
In 1850, Jesse Scott, age 70, was living at Charlottesville, Albemarle County, Virginia, USA. Jesse owned real estate valued at $1200. His wife is not listed and may have passed by this date. His son Robert, age 44, and family were living with him. His son James, age 35, and wife also lived with him.[3]
In 1860, Jesse Scott, age 80, was living in the household of Robert Scott, age 56, at Fredericksburg Parish, Albemarle County, Virginia, USA. Jesse owned real estate valued at $2500. They lived next to James Scott , age 50. [4]
Jesse Scott passed about 1862.
