Biography

Charles, or Ed as he was called, was born in 1846, the son of William Augustus and Harriet Partridge (Hale) Scribner, in New Albany, Indiana, where he was raised and lived out his life.

On October 18, 1876, Ed married Nancy "Annie" Ellen Day, the daughter of Silas Condit Ayers and Harriet Newell (McClung) Day, also of New Albany, Indiana.

The couple would have just one child:

Carrie Hale Scribner (1877–1878)

One year after the death of their baby daughter, both Ed and Nancy died in 1879. Ed was 33 years old while Nancy was 26. Their bodies are buried together in the Fairview Cemetery in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana.

The following is Ed's obituary published in the New Albany Daily Ledger Standard on October 3, 1879:

He had been in declining health for about a year past and had been confined to his bed during the past three months. His disease was consumption. Charles Edward Scribner was a native of this city, having been born February 6th, 1846. On the 18th day of October, 1876, he married Miss Nannie E. Day, daughter of Mr. Silas C. Day. One child was born unto them. It died an infant, March 6th, 1878. On the 31st of March, 1879, the mother followed their dear child to the grave and was buried by its side. Thus within little over one year, the child, mother and father left this vale of tears for homes in heaven. For many years Mr. S. was clerk and assistant cashier in the New Albany National bank...
