John Hartwell Scribner was born in May of 1830, the son of Samuel G. and Mehitable (Pierce) Scribner, in Augusta, Maine, where he was raised.
On May 1, 1853, John married Lucinda Catherine Hoyt, the daughter of Asa and Sarah "Sally" (Gasset) Hoyt, in North Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. They settled in East Bridgewater and had the following children:

Eudora L. Scribner (1854-1854)
Isadore A. (Scribner) Green (circa 1855-1908)
Addie J. Scribner (1859-before 1865))
Ophie Conant Scribner (1860-before 1865)
Hollis Hoyt Scribner (1862-after 1926)
Sabin Newton Scribner (1865-1936)
Sarah Mehitable Scribner (1865- )
Ethel May (Scribner) Nash (1868-before 1930)
John worked in a shoe factory in East Bridgewater, to support his family. He also served as a constable in East Bridgewater for a period of time.
Lucinda passed away in 1890 while John lived on until 1901 when he passed while living with his son Sabin and his family. He was about 71 years old.
