Biography

Thomas Scrope was the youngest of three sons born to Adrian Scrope and his wife Mary Waller, and the only one to survice to succeed him. He was baptised on 11 September 1634 at the family church of Lewknor, Oxfordshire, and was not named in the 1634 Visitation of the county. [1] [2]

On 17 October, Adrian Scrope was executed as a regicide for signing the death warrant of King Charles I, and his estate was confiscated by the Crown. Yet within a year his son Thomas had recovered the family estate of Wormsley Manor in Oxfordshire (later Buckinghamshire). [3] [4]

It is undoubtedly not a coincidence that on 20 October 1661 Thomas married Mary Hooke, daughter of Bristol merchant Thomas Hooke. [5] [6]

The marriage was a prosperous one. Thomas and Mary Scrope had two sons, of whom Thomas predeceased him and John had a most illustrious parliamentary career. It is probably the case that Thomas Scrope is best known as the father of Judge John Scrope MP, rather than a son of his own father.

They also had four daughters, of whom, as of 4 December 1700, when Thomas Scrope dated his Will [7] only one had married: Anne, the lady of Henry Fane, whose descendants inherited Wormsley Manor. [8] Under the terms of this document [9] he established by a Deed of Settlement a fund of £2000 from which payments would be made to support daughters Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah Scrope. [10]

Thomas Scrope's Will was proved on 1 August 1704. [7] His wife Mary appears to have survived him.

A legal document relating to settlement of Thomas Scrope's will suggests that Sarah had married "William Wyshall of English Bickham, Glos." and had died by 14 October 1707.[11]
