William Scruggs, Elizabeth, VA Line W3045.
MILITARY: Revolutionary War Pension Record #W3045 dated 20 Aug 1832. Recorded in Book D Vol 9 page 60 in Scott County Kentucky. Personally appeared before the Justice of the County of Scott and State of Kentucky William Scruggs. The said William Scruggs serving the Revolutionary War was a resident citizen of the US in the county of Bedford and state of Virginia. He served on the 6th of Jun 1780 for 2 months. He served a second tour of militia duty in Feb 1781 as a volunteer for 3 months. This Regt. was commanded by Col Lynch, Lt. Maj John Calloway and called the Virginia Volunteer Regt. On 7 Jul 1838 personally appeared before the Justice of the Peace Elizabeth Scruggs aged seventy-two years who made the following declaration. In order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed 7 July 1838 entitled an act granting half pay and pensions to certain widows. She is the widow of William Scruggs who was a soldier on the Virginia Line and a Pensioner in the aforesaid county and she refers to his papers on file as widow. She has searched for his certificate and has not been able to find it after his death. She further declares that she was married to the said William Scruggs on the 14th day of Dec 1784. That her husband the aforesaid William Scruggs died on the 6th day of Jul 1833 and that she has remained a widow ever since his death that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the services but the marriage took place in Bedford County, Virginia previous to the first day of Jan 1794. At the time above stated and she presents her true Family Record which states that Polly F. Scruggs was born 2 oct 1787 which is taken from the Family Bible and contains his true age given under my hand this 24 day of Oct 1838 and this is his daughter by the Elizabeth Scruggs and William Scruggs after their marriage.
