Biography

John Scudder, son of John, was baptized 24 May 1618 at Strood Near Rochester, Kent, England. [1] He was the son of John and Elizabeth (Stoughton) Scudder.[2]

In his family history book, the Hon. H. Franklin Andrews (1902) records: [3]

"John Scudder, born England 1619 came from London with wife HANNAH, his sister ELIZABETH SCUDDER and with the family of Thomas Ewer in ship James, 1635; admitted Freeman 1639, Charlestown; Removed to Barnstable, 1640; Freeman there 1654. ...he appears to have been allied to the Scudders of Salem who removed to Long Island abt 1650; John Scudder resided at Barnstable until his death; his house was near that of the late Joshua Thayer. His widow survived him." Note Andrews does not say his surviving widow is named Hannah.

Anderson affirms that John Scudder migrated from London on June 19, 1635, on the ship James. (cites Hotten 88) He first lived in Charlestown, and removed to Barnstable by 1643 (citing PCR 8:193).[2]

Before 1641 the John Scudder (Jr.) property in Barnstable was mentioned as being "On Rendezvous Lane" which was near the property of Mr. john Lothrop.[4] The same source continues: "...The Rev. John Lothrop's great lot contained 45 acres, and extended to the range of fence between the houses of Daniel Downes and Joshua Thayer. This lot was sold by the heirs of Mr. Lothrop to john Scudder and he sold his house and six acres of land to Stephen Davis and the remainder of the land to the Bacons." [5]

1643 John Scudder's residence is recorded in Barnstable, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. [6]

John married Hannah ______ by 1644; she was living as of April 15, 1690 (citing BarnPR 1:34).[2] Torrey shows their marriage by 1646 at Barnstable.[7]

John and Hannah had the following known children:[2][8]

  1. Elizabeth, born say 1644; baptized at Barnstable 10 May 1646; per Anderson, nothing further is known of her
  2. Sarah, baptized 10 May 1646 at Barnstable
  3. Mary, born say 1649; buried at Barnstable 3 Dec 1649
  4. Hannah, baptized 5 Oct 1651, Barnstable; married at Eastham December 1, 1669, Joshua Bangs; [Anderson makes no mention of her death date or a second marriage to Deacon Moses Hatch (she was 12 yrs older than Hatch); she d. 13 May 1739.] [9]
  5. John Scudder, born about 1658; died March 3, 1741-2 in his 84th year (citing MD 8:239); married Elizabeth Hamblin at Barnstable, July 31, 1689 (citing MD 8:239)

15 Oct 1649 John Scudder is recorded in the Barnstable town records on a land deed for John Davis. [10]

12 May 1682 John Scudder is listed in the Barnstable Town Records under a miscellaneous town business category. [11]

John Scudder died before April 15, 1690, when his estate was settled (citing BarnPR 1:34).[2] The settlement of his estate at the Barnstable County Court mentions relict Hannah, son John, and daughter Sarah.[8]

Research Notes

This profile recently showed John Scudder's wife as Elizabeth Lathrop, in error. John Scudder, as the sources in this profile show, was still married to Hannah at the time of his death. There is a marriage shown in Torrey, of a John Scudder (born 1645, Boston) and Elizabeth ______ Lothrop. This listing shows John with a birthdate of 1645, and being of Boston, further eliminating the possibility that this John Scudder is the one who married Elizabeth ______ Lothrop. In researching Torrey's sources, Charlestown 852, and Brainerd Ancestry 255, one finds no support for this marriage. Given that there is no date or place mentioned makes it even harder to find such a marriage.

Perhaps, one birth record is what resulted in Torrey's marriage citation for John Scudder and Elizabeth (___) Lathrop: Per Boston Vital Records, A John Scuddar (sic), "of Elizabeth formerly Lothrop now wife of John Scuddar" was baptized 7 day 10 month, 1645, at First Church at Boston.[12] NOTE: it is uncertain who the parents are in this baptism record. It does not seem to refer to this John Scudder and his Hannah, who were living in Barnstable in 1645.

Apropos of nothing. One of my favourite profs in school was Rogers V Scudder. Looking him up tonight, I see he died in 2006 - and is buried in a cemetery near me. I am saddened by his passing, although he was not a young man when he taught me and I should have expected no less, but grateful that I can go look for his grave.

Maybe you could honor him by working on his genealogy, perhaps even linking him to his immigrant ancestors?

That's a great idea. Although first I want to understand why he has no headstone in the cemetery.
