WARNING: It is highly likely the father of William Charles CRIBB is actually Richard Skuthorpe junior and may not be this Richard. DNA evidence is being collated. Please contact Veronica Williams for more information.

Biography

Flag of Cambridgeshire (adopted 2015)
Richard (Sculthorpe) Skuthorpe was born in Cambridgeshire, England.
Richard (Sculthorpe) Skuthorpe was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales

Richard (Sculthorpe) Skuthorpe, Aka Skuthorp, Skewthorpe.[1] Richard was probably born on 13th August 1791 Cambridgeshire, England. [2] He was baptised at Sudbury, Suffolk, England on 19 Sep 1791, the son of Wm Skulthorpe and Fann Carly Skulthorpe.[3]

Richard Sculthorpe arrived in Australia as a convict, aged 35, aboard the General Hewitt arriving at Port Jackson on 7 February 1814. He was transported for life, for stealing a bay mare from Mr Wm. Jones, of Sudbury being convicted at Suffolk Assizes on 24 Mar 1813. A Protestant, and later a farmer in North Richmond, 385 acres, 285 cleared, 130 acres cultivated, 3 horses, 78 horned cattle and 5 sheep. Immigration.

Richard lived in the area known as Kurrajong South, or Little Kurrajong and called his property Grose Vale. Grose Vale later became the name of the locale.[4]

He married Eleanor (Ellen, Honor) Connor in 1818 in St Peters Church of England, Richmond, New South Wales, Australia[5] and their children were Richard Skuthorp, Thomas E Skuthorp, Ellen Skuthorp, Frances (Skuthorp) Markwell, Ellen Skuthorp, John Skuthorp and Elizabeth (Skuthorpe) Lamrock.

He is recorded as receiving a Ticket for Exemption from Labour to reside with his family and wife Ellen Connor, subsequently torn up on receiving his Ticket of Leave.[6][7][8][9]

Richard gained his Conditional Pardon on 20 NOV 1837.

He may have been in a relationship with Jane (Hewitt) Cribb from about 1847 and there was possibly a son born, named William Charles Cribb. It is not yet clear whether this child may have actually been the son of Richard's son, Richard, known as "Rick" or "Middle Dick", Skuthorp[10].

He then married Sarah Matilda (Sherwood) Douglass on 16 January 1858 [11] (to 1860) in Windsor, New South Wales, Australia.

Possible further marriage to Louisa Mckay on 10 September 1861 in New South Wales, Australia[12].

Richard died on 2 June 1880, at his home, 'Lemon Forest' in Kurrajong, New South Wales, Australia[13]. He is buried in Skuthorpe family vault, in the cemetery adjoining St Peters, Richmond, New South Wales.

Relationships

Richard married at least three times.

1. Ellen (Honor) Irwin nee CONNOR - V18182265 3/1818 SKULTHORP RICHARD CONNOR HONOR CE (Arrived on Boyd 1909, came free). Believed to have had at least 7 children.
2. Sarah Matilda SHERWOOD.
3. Louisa McKAY/McGUIRE.

Other relationships

A baptism was recorded at Lower Hawkesbury, County of Cumberland for a William Charles CRIBB. It lists his birth date as 1 Feb 1849 and baptism date as 10 Sep 1849, parents jane CRIBB and Richard SKEWTHORPE. Residence is stated to be Upper Colo. It is presumed the parents were not married at the time. It is unclear whether this is Richard Skuthorp snr or his son Richard 'Middle Dick' Skuthorp jnr, both are appropriate ages, with Jane somewhere between the two. It seems reasonable to assume if Jane’s daughter Mary Ann CRIBB married Thomas Skuthorp she may have had an encounter with a relative of her son in law (she was in between the ages of his father and his brother). Both of their wives are still alive in 1848, but Richard senior was known to have moved about between Richmond and Parramatta, as he was a District Constable. Jane left most of her estate to William Charles, the 10th of her children, could this have been due to support she had received from Richard snr?

DNA

As DNA research has confirmed a connection to this Skuthorpe family, Richard senior has been attached as the father of William Charles CRIBB, given he is the more likely of the two. Hopefully ongoing DNA research may help confirm the theory. As at 2023, it appears that Richard jnr may be a more likely candidate. DNA analysis is ongoing. Please contact Veronica WIlliams if you can help with this research.

Research Notes

  • There is a Richard Sculthorpe christened in 1780, father Richard Sculthorpe, 4 March 1780 at Fort St George,Madras,Tamil Nadu, India. Could be a relation of some kind?

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Richard by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Richard:

Skulthorpe-3 and Sculthorpe-5 appear to represent the same person because: Surname miss-spelled.

Sculthorpe should be retained as the LNAB as this accords with transportation records and no baptism can be found.
Skuthorp-11 and Sculthorpe-5 appear to represent the same person because: Same relationships and vital details
