Margaret Seale Orr, 81, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, in Dallas, where she was evacuated from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 1 at Hiller Funeral Home.
Margaret was born October 6, 1928, in Bryan, where she was raised. She attended the Junior College of the Hockaday School in Dallas and the University of Texas. She moved to New Orleans in the 1950s, and became actively involved in the community. She was a longtime member of St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church where she was a Deacon, nursery school and Sunday school teacher.
She was a member of the New Orleans Country Club, Orleans Club and Pi Beta Phi Fraternity. She loved tennis and playing bridge, but especially loved teaching children to read in the STAIR program at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church and the Andrew Jackson School where she was the coordinator. She ran Big Tree Day Camp for many years teaching children the love of the outdoors.
Margaret suffered a stroke seven years ago, becoming partially paralyzed and unable to speak. She became famous for her beautiful smile and hand wave at the Traymore Nursing Home in Dallas, Texas. She lived, suffered and died with great dignity.
Margaret was preceded in death by her father, Frank Bell Seale; mother, Kathleen (Clinton) Seale Callan; brother, Robert Henry Seale II; and stepfather, William Woody Callan.
Her survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Katheen (Orr) and Robert Birtel and Margaret and Bill Settoon of New Orleans; sister and brother-in-law Kathleen Seale and Fred Lohmeyer of Dallas and Kerrville, Texas; five grandchildren, Robert Clinton Birtel and wife, Emily, of Dorado, Puerto Rico, Michael Anderson Birtel, Kathleen, Alden and Grace Settoon; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
