Biography

Charity Seale was born about 1765, probably in Fairfield county, South Carolina where her parents were residing at the time. She is the daughter of Charles Seale and Lydia Muse.

1790 census enumerates Elias Jones in Fairfield County, South Carolina with 1 male older than 16, 2 males younger than 16 and 3 females.[1]

By 1800 Elias Jones and family were in adjacent Kershaw District. Enumerator reports 1 male<10, 1male 26-45; 2males>45; 2 females<10, 1female 10-16, 1 female 26-45 (so, born 1765-1784) This is consistent with Charity's birthyear of 1765[2]

That Elias Jones married Charity Jones is recorded in documents involving Charles Seale; first a land transaction; second an estate conveyence. This also places Elias and Charity in Fairfield County, South Carolina in 1798.[3]

On 11 September 1798, Charles Seale sold a 50-acre tract of land to Elias Jones, [his son-in-law], for £50 Sterling. The land lay on Sawney's Creek of the Wateree River, and Charles' sons, James and Daniel Seale, witnessed the transaction. [4]

Charles Seale died soon after making this transaction. By October 22nd, 1798, his surviving heirs had sold his remaining 50 acres in Fairfield to his youngest son, Daniel for 10 dollars each. The deed transferring the land to Daniel reads in part as follows:

State of South Carolina, Fairfield County] Know all by these presents that whereas Charlyes Seal late of the county and state aforesaid planter deceased was at the time of his death seized in his demesne as of fee or some other good estate and inheritance to him and his heirs forever of and in a certain plantation or tract of land containing fifty acres being the undivided moiety or full half part of a tract of one hundred acres of land situate in the county aforesaid on Sauneys creek bounded SW on Hardy Rice Jonstons land the other sides on vacant land when surveyed originally granted to John Willson 31st August 1774 & by him sold conveyed to Charles Seal which said fifty acres is situate on the north side of sauneys creek & hath such descriptions as by the said grant & conveyance will appear and whereas the said Charles Seal lately died intestate within the county and state aforesaid whereby the aforesaid fifty acres of land came and decended to Anthony Seal, Thomas Seal, Enoch Seal, James Seal, Elijah Seal, Joshuah Seal, Robert Dickinson or Nancy his wife, Elias Jones and Charity his wife, Abraham Peevey and Lydia his wife and Daniel Seal the children and coheirs of the said Charles Seal deceased and whereas it was the dying request of the said Charles Seal that his son Daniel Seal should have and enjoy the whole of the aforesaid tract of fifty acres of land without a let hindrance or molestation of the Remainder of his said children or any of those Now Know ye that we the said Anthony Seal, Thomas Seal, James Seal, Elijah Seal, Joshuah Seal, Robert Dickinson and Nancy his wife, Elias Jones and Charity his wife and Abraham Peevy and Lydia his wife for and in consideration of the dying request of the said Charles Seal as well as the sum of ten dollars to us paid by the said Daniel Seal all our right title claim or interest which we or any or within of us may have in Law or equity of in or to the aforesaid fifty acres of land together with all and singular the rights member heredidaments and appurtenances to the said premises. . . 1840 Union county Georgia. Charity is listed as head of household, age 70-80.[6]

In 1850 Charity, age 85, birthstate "unknown" is in Union county Georgia in the household of William Jones, age 53, born in South Carolina.[7]

Research Notes

I offer RHSeale MD|9 Dec 2022 for consideration some evidence that Elias Jones husband of Charity was in South Carolina until at least 1810. Afterwards removed to Buncombe county, North Carolina after receiving land grant in 1812 (and again in 1820). (Land grant by itself does not prove residence), possibly removed to Macon county, North Carolina by 1830. Land transaction that included Charity's name would help prove this sequence.

• There is no Elias Jones that has been indexed in Kershaw or Fairfield county South Carolina in 1810
• 1810 there is an Elias Jones in Buncombe county, North Carolina: 1 male 16-26, 1male 26-45, 2 females 10-16 1 female over 45. (1830 census suggests that Charity is slightly older than Elias ?)[8]

• On 11 Sep 1812 an Elias Jones received a land grant #1989 on Hominy Creek - which lies in Buncombe county, North Carolina.[9]
• An Elias Jones received a land grant 10 Nov 1820, #01061 "beginning on a double hickory stump" in Buncombe county, North Carolina.[10]
• In 1820 no Elias Jones is indexed in Buncombe or Macon counties, North Carolina, nor in Kershaw or Fairfield counties South Carolina, nor in Union county Georgia.

• 1830 Census, There is an Elias Jones in Macon county, North Carolina.[11]
1 male 5-10; 1 male 50-60 (Elias?); 1 female 60-70 (Charity?)
2 households away, Elias's son?: William Jones, 1 male<5, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 30-40; 1 female <5, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 30-40
• No wills or probate for Elias Jones have been located on Ancestry.com($)
• 1840 Union county, Georgia. There is a William Jones, 40-50 but no 75 year old woman in the household[12]
• 1850 Union county, Georgia.[13]
William Jones 53 in 1850 born South Carolina. [If William is son of Elias and Charity he presumably would have been born in 1797 in South Carolina]
Susannah, 53, born South Carolina
Jackson, 35 born North Carolina
Allen 24, born North Carolina
Charity Jones 85, born unknown

William Jones 63 in 1860, Union, Georgia. born "North Carolina." Second wife Sarah 20, born Georgia. E J 46, born GA.[14]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Charity by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Charity:

Seale-710 and Seale-654 appear to represent the same person because: Dates and info are a bit garbled but I believe there was only one Charity Seale in this era and with these dates, the daughter of Charles Seale (Seale-23)

A lot of people have asserted that Charity Jones, *mother of Jones-52018, had the maiden name Seale, but I have never seen any actual source for that. Do you have anything for that? Beyond that, the dates of birth are 11 years apart. Discrepancies are common, but that is kind of big. *edit

I have approved the merge. I am excited about the new information you have added to the profile! Note that in the last sentence of the profile, in 1850, Charity is in Union County, not Hancock County, Georgia.

How set in stone is 1777 for her birth year? Is it possible that she was the Charity Jones in Union Co., GA in 1840 and 1850? The problem is that Charity Jones was in her 70's in 1840 and 85 in 1850 (household of William Jones), birth year about 1765. My gg-gf Jesse Posey and his mother, Cealey Jones Posey, were probably the two other people with Charity in 1840. Jesse named his first children William and Charity, and another daughter Lydia. At Ancestry, I currently match 165 descendants of Charles and Lydia Muse Seale by their other children. Descendants of Lorenzo Dow Posey b. 1826 and other descendants of Jesse also tend to match them, but not so much others of my relatives. Charity's husband may have been Elias Jones. One Elias Jackson Jones was living with William in 1850 and 1860 (son or much younger brother?). I match over 20 descendants of Elias. I'd appreciate comments about my comment, thanks!

I feel like I've been holding out on you... I've held off adding the documentary evidence for Charity primarily because there were two profiles - I was going to wait until after the merge, but.... When I get the data entered it will show there is only one Charity Seale of that era, daughter of Charles, mentioned in his will; Charity named as wife of Elias in a deed transfer; Charity and Elias in a separate deed; Charity in Union co. GA in 1840 that you noted, age 70-80; Charity again in 1850, age 85 in household of William, yes probably her son, but I can not attest to that one.

The "1777" date is a holdover from the days of Ida Carrie Seale, bless her heart - much of her guesswork lives on 70 years later thanks to Ancestry.com. This is a busy time but I promise I'll make that a priority. I have 14,500 (good) Seale references collected since the 1970s and so far have uploaded only about 1,400 of them. Look also for Seale contributions by Timothy Hudson, and Carol Wilder, both excellent researchers.

Thank you very much for posting all of that good information; I understand about wanting to get all of the ducks in a row. As for Cealey (Celia?) Jones Posey, a question was whether she was a daughter or granddaughter of Elias and Charity. From household members' age ranges in 1810, she was probably one of the females age 10-16 and most likely daughter. This fits her age range in the household of Hezekiah Posey, adjacent to Daniel Posey in 1830 Carroll Co., GA. The lack of a proper paper trail makes researching this line very difficult. Descendants of Cealey's sons, Jesse (b. 1830 in GA) and Lorenzo [b. 1826 in AL(?)], don't all agree about the early family.

My great great grandfather, Jesse Posey, was probably the boy living with Charity in 1840. He named his first two children William (my g-gf) and Charity. Daughter Charity (Posey) Pless married Rheu Emma and Seaborn's son, John Monroe "John Roe" Pless. Another daughter of Jesse, Naoma C (Posey) Jones married William Jones' son, Darrel W. Jones. Jesse's mother, Cealey (Jones) Posey may have been a sister of William and was probably the younger woman with Charity in 1840. At Ancestry, I currently match 165 descendants of Charles Seale and Lydia Muse, possible parents of Charity, and 24 descendants of Elias Jones (who married a Charity Seale). Other descendants of Jesse and of Lorenzo Dow Posey match these Joneses and Seales more frequently than do other Poseys or others of my relatives. Food for thought?
