Biography

Lewis A Seals/Seales was born Sep 1847 Alabama, [1] son of Wilburn R Seals and Elizabeth Ann Stracener

Lewis married Frances J Turner (“Fannie”) before 1867[2]. Lewis was with his parents in St. Clair county, Alabama in 1850 and 1860, and with wife Frances in 1870.

Military

Confederate Cavalry: Lewis A enlisted in Co. C of Hardies battalion of cavalry reserves, probably when that unit was organized in June 1864, at age 17. [3] He was quite young but the regimental history states “There were about nine regiments and three battalions of reserves, composed for the most part of very young men, and they were organized principally for the defense of Mobile, AL, and the bay forts.”[4]

Death

Lewis died 4 Jan 1919, in Pulaski, Arkansas[5] bur. Daniel Cem. Wickes, Polk, Arkansas, [6] The cemetery records cite a death date of 4 Jan 1919, and describe the stone location as Section B, row 2.[7]

1878: An announcement in the Shelby Sentinel noted that “Mr. L A Seales has moved to Arkansas,”[11]

1880 he was recorded in Blackwood, Howard co. Arkansas census.[12]

1889 He received a Howard county land grant in 1889, in Sec.17, Twp 6S, R28W, adjacent to land owned by his brother James (see map above). [13]

1897 He sold this land 12 Oct 1897[14]

By 1900 he was in Ozark, Polk co. Arkansas, widowed, living as a boarder. [15]

He operated a general store in Grannis, Polk, Arkansas. [16]
