Biography

Susan Ellen Seals was born 23 Jan 1849 [1] in Alabama, [2] the daughter of Daniel Seale and Ann Kelly.

She was the second wife of W C Claxton. Marriage license was issued 27 January 1879 in Giles County, Tennessee[3]

“Born in Alabama, Mrs. Claxton came to Texas about 1894 to spend the first eleven years in this state in Ellis County. At the end of that time the family moved to this [Abilene area] section. She is survived by four sons and three daughters. W R and G W Claxton of Abilene; D T and J H Claxton of Hawley; Mrs. Jim C Walker and Mrs. W M Harris of Nugent, and Mrs. W T Carver, Jackson, Tennessee”[4]

Death

“Mrs. Ellen Claxton” death certificate states she died in Hawley, Jones County, Texas, 14 July 1930. Her father’s name in that record is given as “Daniel Seals”. Informant W E Claxton did not know her mother’s maiden name. She had only been living in Hawley for 2 months prior to her death. She was buried in Round Mound Cemetery, Abilene, 15 July 1930. [5] Abilene Daily Reporter of July 16 states she died “at 11:15 last night” which would be 15 July, 1930. Her headstone appears to be in error, giving dates as “1847-1928” [6]
