Little is known of Joseph S Seaman except for his existence in census records and military service record. He was a casualty of the US Civil War.

At age-23, Joseph J Seaman enlisted as a private in the NY volunteers at Mamakating, New York on 30 Aug 1862 for a three-year enlistment. He was assigned to the 4th Heavy Artillery. Joseph J. Seaman was listed as missing in action following the Battle of Reams Station, Aug 1864. His service record indicates he died of disease at Salisbury, North Carolina on 12 Dec 1864. He died with the rank of corporal.

Joseph lies buried with his parents at Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery, Orange County, New York.
