Biography

Ferderick Searle was born about 1752 in New Jersey. (Some say in Oxford in Warren County, others Readington in Hunterdon COunty. Source is needed.) He is said to be the son of Reuben Searles amd Elizabeth Clover.. [citation needed]

He married Anna Maria (Last name unknown) and they had at least nine children. (See list mentioned in will below.)

Frederick's will, written 22 December 1822, and entered for probate on 23 June 1838 begins,

"I, Frederick Searle of the Township of Knowlton in the County of Sussex and State of New Jersey..." and goes on to mention the following children: [1]

  • Catherine, (daughter - married to Enos Savige)
  • Elizabeth (daughter-married to William Pittenger)
  • Peggey (daughter - married to Jonas Jones)
  • Mary (daughter-married to Peter Sigler)
  • Adilinah (daughter-married to Michal BUtts)
  • Thomas (son who is deceased) each of his children are given an inheritance but are not named)
  • Isaac (son - named Executor)
  • Susannah (daughter - named "Executrix")
  • Ann (daughter - named "Executrix")

Fredrick died 29 May 1838 in New Jersey [2] and is buried at First Presbyterian Church of Oxford Churchyard, Hazen, Warren County, New Jersey. "[3]

Research Note

Family Name

The family name is variously written as Searle or Searls. In Fredrick's last will and testament he spelled it Searle. His headstone however appears to have been inscribed "Searles." The Searls or Searles name appears most common on the internet however in documents of the time, the name Searle was more common. Fredrick's son, Isaac, or his executor, was so committed to ensuring that he not be known as "Searles" as to have a period inscribed at the end of his name on his headstone, where someone might be tempted to add the "S" : "Searle." Records for the elder Frederick's birth have not yet been found to confirm this, but it would seem that his LNAB is Searle.
