Biography

The will of Mary Worden was dated 6 March 1686.[1] Mary left a female Native American slave to her son Samuel, and her clothing to be divided among her three daughters Mary Burge, Mercy Winslow and Martha Seaverns. The balance of the estate went to her son-in-law John Burge who was her executor. The will was probated 31 May 1687 and witnessed by Samuel Sears, Silas Sears. and Gov. Thomas Hinckley.[2] Her inventory heading records her death as 25 March 1687 and was taken on 29 April 1687 in Yarmouth.[3]

Mary died on 25 March 1687 in Yarmouth,[4] and is thought to be buried with her husband in the Worden-Winslow Cemetery, East Dennis, Massachusetts (formerly the east end of Old Yarmouth).

Children:

  1. Mary Worden Burgess 1639–1724
  2. Marcy/Marcy Worden Winslow 1641–1688
  3. Martha Worden Severance 1643–1725
  4. Samuel Worden 1645–1716

Research Notes

Disputed Parents/Surname:

Some Records of Persons by the Name of Worden by Oliver N. Worden published in 1868 states that Mary's maiden name was Sears (perhaps because her will lists several 'Sears' witnesses) or Winslow, but this has never been proven.[5]

The Worden Family Association has engaged numerous and thorough researchers in the US and England to uncover her birth name and parentage, thus far without success.[6]

She also was NOT born Winslow.

Worden, 1868, thinks she was a Sears or Winslow. She certainly was not a Sears. Freeman's Hist. Cape Cod, II 764, says 'Kenelm Winslow, Jr., married first his cousin, Mercy Worden,' and this indicates a previous Winslow and Worden marriage [disproven later]. Mary Worden's will is recorded at Barnstable. A search of Winslow records might settle the connection." [It did; there wasn't one.]

Merged duplicate profile, removing bio info that again linked her to the Winslow family lacking reliable sources.

Winslow-2683 and Unknown-452955 appear to represent the same person because: Same woman, her maiden name is UNKNOWN. Please merge.

This poor profile has been through so much over the years -- a tug of war between those who believe she was a Winslow when the only evidence for that appears to be an 1868 book that admits speculation. And unfortunately, when she was last changed to Unknown and had her parent detached she wasn't project protected, so it's happened again. Marilyn, you somehow adopted this profile last month and then proceeded to change her name and parents despite what's written here. Please change her name back to Unknown and detach her parents. I will add the PGM project account so the project will be informed of changes. Thanks.

Please see the disputed origins section, where it is clear that her maiden name, parents, etc. are unknown. A merge should not have been performed.

an obvious observation ...... w/ a DOB in 1604 ....... her POB cannot be anywhere in North America. A correction ought to be made.

The tombstone cited is not accurate. I'm sure it was installed long after the fact of her burial. Mary Unknown Worden remains a mystery No reliable evidence to the contrary has been found. All of this information about her parents and siblings should be removed.

Sears is maiden name on her tombstone site with this info stated when Peter and Mary married...Married Mary Magdalene Winslow on Feb 9, 1638.

Sears-1711 and Unknown-327410 are not ready to be merged because: Cheryl is checking to see if Mary Sears was an actual person before deleting her. Mary Sears and Mary Worden were not the same person.

Sears-1711 and Unknown-327410 appear to represent the same person because: Yes! Mary Sears is a persistent and frustrating and false myth. The ENTIRE POINT of the proposed merge is to get RID of the Mary Sears profile and leave only Mary Unknown. That's the process WikiTree wants us to use to solve this problem. It's also why we made sure Mary "Sears" is detached from any parents before the merge. The proposed merge will help with exactly the mythbusting you are hoping for! Here's my resubmit. Please approve! Thanks!

With all the information about not being a Sears.... she's still a Sears. . .

When completing the current merge proposal be sure to merge her into UNKNOWN-28254 and detach her from the Sears parents. Thank you.

Sears-1711 and UNKNOWN-28254 appear to represent the same person because:

Peter II's wife is, as yet, unknown. Please see notes on this profile.

Per Doris' comment below, I am removing Samuel b. 1643 (Worden-144) as a child.

This Mary is not the mother of Samuel Worden b. 1643; she is the mother of Samuel Worden b. 1646. Samuel b. 1643 has no known parents.
