1966 Harvard Fifitieth Anniv Report p. 88 Home: Dennis, MA, Retired from active business. The Sears Corporation, formerly an investment banking company, is now a personal holding company. They have three children. There are eleven grandchildren. Sears reports that he served as chairman of the board of trustees of the Mass Mental Health Center and Dennis Board of Appeals, Dennis, Mass. Formerly engaged in investment banking with a New York Stock Exchange firm, he is retired. He writes: "After graduation, i worked for United Drug Company for two years, and then entered the investment banking business as a neophyte with the firm of Estabrook & Company. During World War I, i was a yeoman second class in the US Navy. After the war, I was with the National City Company, soon to become Sears Corporation. As investment bankers, we had a substantial business in New England. "For a few years while retaining the chairmanship of the Sears Corporation, I reorganized the Croft Brewing Company which my company had originally financed with Fenner & Beane of New York. When the Croft Brewing Company was put on its feet, and in excellent financial shape, we sold it to the Narragansett Brewing Company. I then merged my investment firm with Chace, Whiteside & Winslow, members of the New York Stock Exchange, where although retired, I have an interest. In the meantime, I have held eighteen directorships and trusteeships. "My most interesting work has been, and still is, that of being able to give my service as a chairman of the board of trustees of the Mass Mental Health Center, one of the outstanding mental hospitals in the world, and which is very closely associated with the Harvard Medical School. "This is the picture of my business career. "In 1946 I had an operation for high blood pressure (splanchnic ectomy) which was very successful, and now I have the blood pressure of a teen-ager. In 1961 I had an operation for cancer which luckily was very successful. Now feeling great for an old codger. "I am retired on Cape Cod, at Dennis. My pastimes are my lobster pots and specializing in growing championship tomatoes. "My married life (forty-nine years today) has been one of supreme happiness. Home: Seaside Ave, Dennis.
