  • May, Samuel. The Descendants of Richard Sares (Sears) of Yarmouth, Mass., 1638-1888Page 245 (Joel Munsell's Sons, 1890) Orin Sears removed to Hingham, MA, where he carried on salt works and a farm. m. Hannah M Hopkins b. Provincetown, 18 Sep 1808. [So maybe she was a Hopkins and not a Nickerson. A child is named Hannah Maria.] He was for many years a local preacher, class leader and steward in the Methodist Episcopal Church, and has served the town as Selectman and Clerk. He removed to Hingham in 1846 and was for several years the proprieotr and manager of salt works on the westerly side of the harbor.
  • Walter E Babbitt papers, Sturgis Library shows he m. Hanna Maria Hopkins - Family chart by Mrs Robert H Marshall - Orin worked as a farmer and had saltworks. Owned packet which sailed from Brewster to Boston, raised the Barrel when ship was in, lived in West Brewster in "Packet House." was town selectman and clerk.
  • NEHGS Register Vol 104, p. 218 He removed with his family to Hingham in 1846 and was for several years the proprietor and manager of salt works on the westerly side of the harbor.
  • 1900 Census Name: Orin Sears Home in 1900: Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts Not listed w/ other children in Harwich VR
  • http://en.rodovid.org/wk/Person:138316 Found the death record of Hannah M. Sears in Hingham. She died Hingham, 30 Nov 1891, age 82y-1[either a 1 or 6] m-12d, of inanition, married, housewife, res. Lincoln Street, b. Provincetown, father ----- Hopkins (b. Provincetown), mother Abigail Atwood (b. Provincetown); buried Hingham. Based on this, I would say that your research refutes what the Nickersons say about the possible marriage of Hannah Nickerson to Orin. Also, an 1808 birth is inconsistent with an 1817 marriage. I will certainly re-do my genealogy on the Nickersons to reflect your research. Thanks! Burt Derick
  • Wayne Van Buren research: Subject: Spouse of Orin Sears - This is an attempt to settle the question of who is the spouse of Orin Sears (1802-1892). Is it Hannah Mayo Nickerson, as proposed by the Nickerson Family genealogy and the Sears Family website, or is it Hannah M. Hopkins, as proposed by Samuel May's Sears genealogy. I believe the following decides the argument in favor of the latter.
The following data is taken from the Sears Family website. Orin Sears (Reuben5 , Willard4 , John3 , Paul2 , Richard1 ) was born on 9 Sep 1802 in Harwich, MA. He died 27 Jul 1892 in Hingham, MA (per Hingham Vital Records).
He was buried in Hingham Cemetery Plot E-105-4 (photo at findagrave.com).
My argument is as follows: There is much data which leads me to believe that Orin married Hannah Hopkins, rather than Hannah Nickerson. I believe that the confusion arises because there were two Hannah Hopkins in Brewster at the time of Orin's marriage.
Let's first consider Hannah Mayo Hopkins (nee Nickerson). The Nickerson Family Genealogy (Part IV, page 400) states that Hannah M. Nickerson married Zoheth Hopkins Junior (intentions 19 Apr 1817 per the Brewster Vital Records) and she perhaps married second Orin Sears. I find no record of a death or divorce of Zoheth. However, I do find the record of the marriage intentions of Miss Hannah M. Hopkins (21 Nov 1829, per the Brewster VR). I find the Miss significant because on the same and adjacent pages of the Brewster VR there are several marriage intentions where the spouse is listed as Mrs, indicating that she was previously married. This is not the case with Orin Sears and Hannah Hopkins. Samuel May's Sears genealogy lists Hannah Hopkins, born in Provincetown, 18 Sep 1808. This date is consistent with the dates for the spouse of Orin Sears in several US censuses, e.g., 1850 and 1880, but it is not consistent with Hannah Mayo Nickerson being the spouse of Orin Sears, as she was married to Zoheth Hopkins, and bore a child in 1817, at the age of nine?
As to the second Hannah Hopkins, the Hingham Vital Records record the death of the spouse of Orin Sears on 30 Mar 1891 as being age 82 years, 6 months, and 12 days, which corresponds exactly with the date of birth of 18 Sep 1808 listed above. It also lists her place of birth as Provincetown, and her parents as (_) Hopkins and Abigail Atwood. All this is inconsistent with the assumption of Orin's spouse as Hannah Mayo Nickerson. The NEHGR, Vol. 104, Pg. 104, July 1950 lists Hannah M. Hopkins, daughter of Scammon Hopkins and Abigail (Nabby) (_), born in Provincetown, 18 Sep 1808, married in Brewster 10 Dec 1829 to Orrin Sears. He removed with his family to Hingham in 1846. These dates are consistent with Samuel May's data. The date of birth on her tombstone, 1808, (Hingham Cemetery Plot E-105-4), is inconsistent with the date of Hannah Mayo Nickerson's marriage date of 1817. With regard to Hannah's middle name (Mayo or Maria?), Samuel May shows one child named Hannah Maria, so the middle name Maria could be likely. My family notes (undocumented) also give Hannah Marie for Orin's spouse's name. I believe this is a convincing argument for Hannah M. Hopkins, daughter of Scammon and Abigail Hopkins, being the spouse of Orin Sears, rather than Hannah Mayo Nickerson. I would appreciate any comments you might have.
