Biography

Edward Seddon was born in about 1805 in Sutton, Lancashire.

Edward married Elizabeth Ashton on 22 Feb 1829 at Farnworth Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. Both were of the local parish; Edward was a collier, Elizabeth a spinster. The witnesses were David Clegg and James Southern.

Their daughter Christina Sarah or Sarah was born in about 1831 in St Helens, Lancashire.

Their daughter Jane was born in about 1834 in Eccleston, Lancashire.

Their son Edward was born in about 1836 in Eccleston, Lancashire.

Their son William was born in 1839 in Eccleston, Lancashire.[1]

By June 6th 1841, they were living in Springfield Row, Eccleston. Edward was a coal miner, Elizabeth a glass smoother. There were five children in the household - Sarah (aged 10-14), Jane (aged 5-9), Edward (aged 5-9), William (2) and baby Jane (2 months). It seems highly unlikely they would have had two daughters both named Jane. The baby's age was originally entered in the male column, then moved to the female one, so it's possible it may have been a boy named James, which is easily mistaken for Jane. There's no birth registration for a child of either sex with mother's maiden name Ashton listed on the GRO website, so if the baby was Edward and Elizabeth's then either the birth wasn't registered, or through clerical error hasn't made its way into the online index. There was a James Seddon birth registration in the second quarter of 1841, with mother's maiden name blank, so an illegitimate child. None of Edward and Elizabeth's daughters were old enough to have a baby, but the baby could have been a niece or nephew. A James Seddon, son of Maria (spinster of Sutton) was christened on 17 May 1841 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, and perhaps this is baby "Jane".

Edward and Elizabeth's son John was born in 1842, probably in Eccleston, Lancashire.[2] (Same person as Thomas in 1861?)

Their son Thomas was born in about 1843 in Eccleston (Same person as John or not?)

Their son James was born in 1845, probably in Eccleston, Lancashire.[3]
